well, I bought this car 2 days before xmas last year, and slowly begun the standard resto package. I have not driven it much since driving it over from near worthing to devon. only up and down a private lane to keep it moving. so for anyone that does not know, this is the non supercharged XJR from 92. one of only 18 Manuals made in RHD. no one knows exactly how many remain (but my guess is around 5-6 maybe), but I know of only 3 including this one. if anyone knows of another, please let me know. a lot more auto models still around if you want more info on them see here. some picture of my car are up on the gallery section too. www.jaguarsport-xjr.com/251BHP, 4.0 straight six, with Bilstein sport suspension, manual box (getrag 290) and LSD or Powr-Lok as jag liked to call it. subtle body kit. its a very rare colour combo too, and possible unique. Black Cherry paint, black leather interior, with red stitching and red carpets! I have another 5 xj40 on the go and the long serving range rover of course, so it keeps me very busy. my passion is for the manual models particular, but they are hard to find! lots of pictures. the car is all dirty when I picked it up, and its all in bits now. resto begins wow, so many photos! so thats about where I am at right now. trying to meet a august 23rd deadline to make it to a meet, but who knows whether I can get it to a decent standard and all back together by then. not talking concourse, but just solid, and things working and handling well with new bushes. will see.......

picked up 3 manuals from warickshire police, when they retired them, all the drivers loved those beasts!! ah yes, all the police spec cars were 4.0 Manual. white with special interior, no wood veneers, different door cards, no radio (space for police radios), cloth seats. police spec springs. seen pictures of them and one at breakers yard. prefer the xjr though

Big, powerful, manual Jags are what dreams are made of. Would love something like this, although I wouldn't be able to resist drifting it, which would ultimately ruin it.

Fantastic! I used to have an 89 model with twin headlights. It was an auto, but I thought that suited the car better (Maybe the only one on this forum haha). Awesome handling and fast too despite only 250bhp in such a big car. mine was black with cream leather. Yours looks brilliant in that shade of black with black leather. All the best with it!!

the auto (XJ40) XJR was produced in much larger number. i do not have the figures for those but it think its closer to 1000 cars.
in terms of how fast it is, by todays standards not "that fast", but really depends what you are used to of course. these cars are not about outright speed, as they are big, heavy luxury cruisers really. they are more about comfort and style with some decent performance thrown in. but by the standards of the day in 1992, it was a quick car. 0-60 in 6.7 seconds in manual form. the manual jags always have 1 second over the autos in 0-60 (so the auto xjr is 7.7s). if you compare it to the 6.0 V12 XJ81 variant, the 0-60 on that is the same (or even 6.8 secs 0-60 officially).
standard 4.0 manual was 7.1s 0-60, so its not got much over the standard engine, but with better handling and LSD (and styling of course)

It certainly looks as if you have having fun with the welder!
I do love the XJ40 XJRs. I owned an FG bumpered 4.0 (probably one of the first 4.0 XJRs being an '89 car). A very capable car IMO, and what Jaguar is all about (sportyness with refinement). They are not supercar quick today, and the power of 4.0 XJRs IMO is a little peaky when compared to the BMWs of the day, but then with a high lift inlet camshaft and the revised inlet manifold this was going to influence matters. However, even today the power seems to be delivered in a very usable manner, with them being surprisingly revvy with them being a great driver's car even in Auto form (the steering is heavier on these due to a revalved steering rack, and IIRC the dampers were only one of the few tweaks done to the suspension (thicker ARBs and wider Speedline wheels were also part of the deal IIRC). I do miss my old '40.
Now and again I do see the odd 4.0 XJR crop up in the classifieds, although as previous posters have said, they are creeping up in value probably due to people not shunning the XJ40 as they once did.
It will be great to see this car complete, especially being one of the rarer manual cars.

cant say I really enjoy welding as such. well not when I don't have a great place to work. its a dusty carport with no hard floor. so its dirty and hot work. but its 100% must to have this DIY skill when having lots of old cars on the go. its a nice feeling when all the work is done though, and I can actually have some fun driving the cars. knowing I have saved a very rare car too.
it inspires me to saying lots of other nutters saving rusty old bangers on here too. not all of them rare or valuable, but must obviously float the owners boat.
I think it will be a good achievement to get this car roadworthy in under a year, as I see some resto taking years and years.

well, kind of an overdue update. this car is finally on the road (just in time for winter salty roads humph). i only missed my deadline for the XJ40 annual meet by 7 weeks, haha. so after 10 months of resto, its taxed/ tested and passed first time too. little bit of jiggery pokery on emissions, but got through since it had stood for a long time with not being used. of course there are still things to sort out, as "its never finished", but its road worthy now. a few px from the maiden voyage after the MOT no updated interior pics yet. eagle eyed viewers will spot the quad lamp conversion. i don't mind the fishtanks lamps, but i think they suit sovereign and daimler spec, rather than XJR/ Sport variants. still to do, is leather treatment, air con gas fix/ headlining sagging, one electric window switch. there is some rust on the rear deck, but that will be saved for the phase 2 resto! but for now i am enjoying thrashing the guts out of a proper manual! had one lamp get smashed, now replaced. i wont go into everything thats been done, but if you want to read about it, you can see the full story here. www.xj40.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5431&hilit=+cherry

Great car. The best colour combination i have seen. I'm very glad its being so well looked after too! Good work. rescued in from the brink. so many xj40s are disappearing as there simply are not enough people willing to restore them, and give them the ongoing care they need. indeed, its a very rare color combo. mostly xj40s have light coloured interiors, which are hugely impractical unless you are a company CEO going from swanky house to swanky office. hopefully after you guys have seen this, afew more of you will feel the urge to go and rescue one, before they are all gone!

Is it not expensive to restore a jag (and to fuel it!)? In these austere times I applaud you for taking on Jags so wholeheartedly!
