I love that car, but I'm still trying to come to terms with the interior…

I hadn't heard of it before. I thought, that sounds like a people carrier (forgetting it would just have a number). My jaw hit the floor when I scrolled down!

The Quasar and Oxia were pretty special too. They were, and the Quasar had an *amazing* dash, but the Proxima was always my favourite. (I also really love the Onyx...)

When the French do bonkers cars they do it so right nothing even comes close. This this is absolutely stunning, mental and over the top, but at the same time perfect. Great write up on the blog too

I too was expecting a slammed people carrier or something akin This is how the French designers should be ALL the time EPIC!! Seats would give me permanent red eye, but hell that doesn't matter

I too have always been a massive fan of the Oxia and Proxima (maybe not so much the Quasar). The names are so 'of the period'
The rear wheels on the Proxima are a work of art and I reckon someone ought to put some (with a PCD) into production. Maybe slightly narrower, but with the whole idea of that massive dish. Such a winner!
I also love the way the fake photovoltaic cells have started breaking down and they've left them like that.
Overall, it's like Peugeot were commissioned to produce a car for a real life version of Akira. On acid. Either that or they were sneaking Franco Sbarro into the design facility out of hours. Manufacturers need to start supplying crazy drugs to their designers again. The world needs more craziness like this.

This was one of my cars of the show, think I had a top trumps card back in the day...
Interior is perfect for the period, yuppy spec garish leather, complete with 8" tv in the dash!

Fabulous. I think I had a Matchbox model of this, or the Oxia - I forget.
What engine does it run? Is it a turboed Mi16 motor?

Fabulous. I think I had a Matchbox model of this, or the Oxia - I forget. It's pretty likely you had a Quasar. I had two of them - one was like this and one was the "roadblasters" one (remember them?) Anyway, Mystery Machine has already made a valid point about the rear wheels on this. I need four of them in my life. Nothing to put them on, but still I NEED them. Four of them. Thx.

The Proxima was based on the chassis and engine from the WM Peugeot P86 that ran in Group C2 at Le Mans in 1986: The WM team were French privateers who received varying levels of support from Peugeot (in the late 80s this was a way of Peugeot gaining experience prior to their full works Group C entry). The engine used in the P86 was developed from the PRV V6 unit, using a 3-litre block and crank and specially-developed DOHC heads to give a capacity of 2.8 litres, with the addition of twin turbochargers. In the 1988 P88 version of the car, the engine developed up to 910bhp in race trim, and a 950bhp engine was produced for qualifying. In this form, and with all the cooling ducts taped over on the already slippery bodywork to reduce drag, the P88 (aided by 700kg weight limit of the C2 class) set the outright speed record on the Mulsanne Straight of 253mph, the lack of cooling destroying the engine in the process. The chicanes were added for the following year, so the record still stands.
