That's just crazy, my betting is they will end up on some never-driven concours thing, those sort of people tend to have that sort of money!

Along simlar lines My dad has just been doing some work for a guy who races lemans porches, (not sure which model, but its one of the flat four ones.) He put a rod through the side of his crankcase last race. He tryed to buy one 2nd hand for £13000!!! but the guy dicided wanted more money for it!!! (yes thirteen thousand pounds just for the crankcase!) so my dads been welding up and machiening the old one so he can use that. just a little storey

VW Type3 US-spec rear lights. The ones with the red indicators. Just the lenses go for £70 a pair.

I've seen stuff sell for silly money if its "NOS" or "rare". There was a guy done in the US for selling Buick carburettors which he was claiming to be NOS and 1969, 1970 whatever. He was buying recon ones and carefully machinging off the iID, restamping the date codes and selling a $200 recon carb for $3500 a time. The worst is in the Oldmobile scene, there was a "new" 4 barrel came out in 1965 (IIRC) and these were quickly all recalled and replaced as the castings were poor, went porous, leaked and resulted in bad running or engine fires. For very obvious and good reason they are rare as hens teeth now. Yet if one comes up on eBay you can get like $3000+ for a used one and I heard tell of a NOS one fetching $7000. For a carb which will burn your car out if you use it....

ive seen a few oddball prices but that takes the p1ss saw some chevette pedal rubbers go for about £45 once , nearly fell out my chair laughing... mind you I was quite pleased when I got £24 for a pair of manky old bog standard chevette door mirrors which I nearly threw in the bin the previous week ;D have you noticed though that some of these bidders who just keep bidding and bidding until they win a specific item tend to be ones who havn't got much feed back ? seems like they're getting caught up in the thrill of the chase.... oh and many many years ago i did actually bin a front fibreglass droop snoot thingy off a firenza...............whoops !
