The other thing to remember as mentioned above is that a lot of insurance doesnt cover trailers or caravans and if something happens and the trailer/transporter/caravan comes off and hits another car you may not be covered.
With regards to towing weights thats one of the reasons I like discoverys and other land rovers as they are one of the few vehicles that can legally tow upto 3500kg. I had thought of getting a J crew cab pickup at one point but a lot of those can only carry 1 ton.
The best to do is try not to draw attention to yourself and hope you never have to argue the case.

The only good thing about the situation is that the average bobby, or even traffic cop would not be clued up enough on the law to be sure of doing you for something when he pulled you.

I have it on very good authority that anything being towed on an `A` frame MUST be road legal. If all four wheels are on the ground then it has to be MOT`d, taxed and insured. A towing dolly (i.e where the front wheels are suspended) is a different matter, ditto a transporter trailer of course. That`s not to say that some police will turn a blind eye if you`re being sensible and safe of course, I`d imagaine most aren`t bothered. Rumours are doing the rounds that spec lifts are going to be outlawed in the future which will include recovery trucks fitted with them, though I suppose that`s one to worry about `if and when`. There is some sort of legislation about brakes on `A` frames too, though being honest I`m not 100% certain of what it says. I`d personally go for a decent towing dolly, plenty usually about on eBay but the ones where the wheels of the dolly are on the inside just don`t look that safe to me and the `proper` looking ones are usually big money. I have pondered an `A` frame to tow behind my recovery truck but don`t think it`s worth it, with the possible exception of local scrap runs, because it can effect the gross train weight and then there`s the issue of tachographs etc. Undoubtably towing/`A` frames/spec lifts and dollies are going to be a big issue in the next year or two so go carefully out there. Oh, as a final note a few months ago I saw a Mk3 Transit spec lift dragging a r-a-f Mk1 Transit camper with a tree growing through the roof (I kid you not) along a very busy bypass. Didn`t get the chance to get a picture in time. It was bloody funny though very likely the reason there`s talk of outlawing spec`s.

It used to be that if the car was being towed it became a trailer and was covered under the road tax/ MOT of the towing car. Still needs to be roadworthy though, i.e good tyres e.t.c.
A mate of mine had an oly clunker with no tax or test outside his house for months, the police tried to do him but couldnt because there was a tow rope from it to the rear of a road legal car. This was a few years ago mind.
