Is it possible and practical to us a diving gas cylinder instead of the usual compressor and cylinder combination? I'm thinking that while you have to get refills at the local diving shop, it's going to be much quieter to spray, grit blast etc. I appreciate that air tools would still be as noisy as they are. Another plus might be not needing electricity to work.

you would use the air in the bottle way to quickly. it would work for air-brushing, but everything else would consume the air within minutes. You can get compressors which make very little noise, google bambi compressors. I used to have one and it had a very low noise output, yet made enough air to do some hvlp spraying

You can get stand alone additional airtanks for compressors, it would probably be easier than mucking about keeping tanks in test, making adaptors for the valves etc. Plus personally i like to transport pressurised vessels as little as possible - unless they are built into the vehicle.

the mechanic where I work has a butane bottle set up for blowing up tyres...can do 4 from flat....but no way would it do anything else

Get a hydro vane compressor .. they are so quiet you won't notice it running

if you are both keen and a bit handy you could build a bank of propane cylinders filled by some fridge compressors.
would give you quiet and a bit of capacity but any extensive use will leave you waiting ages to refill.

Race teams in pit garages use bottled nitrogen to run their air tools. It's silent and very clean for the air tools, but obviously not economical for home use. Air tools are very loud anyway, so as long as your compressor is halfway quiet it shouldn't make much difference.

These things are pretty poor to be honest, basically a fridge pump, ok for VERY light amount of work, otherwise they just pass all the oil out of them and burn out |

Yeah, We've got a Clarke version of that at work, we use it for testing air rams etc. Cost £2k+! It's really quiet, but absolutely gutless - I'd rather use my 20l 2.5hp £100 cheapie.
You're right about the oil too, we're constantly topping it up and it only clicks on 6 or 7 times a day

Screw compressors are by far the best
Pistons are noisy but cheap
, hydrovanes break the drive coupling when ran as a stop start machine, the best hydrovanes are the old 23puas (or 33 or 43)models, they continually ran but regulated the pressure to keep a steady 7 bar, but aren't very efficient on power. Brand new hydrovanes are terrible!
Screw type machines do it all, continuos, stop/start, quiet
And you can have an inverter fitted motor so it can run at variable speeds, matching the rpm off the motor to match your air consumption, so very efficient
