I've bought a car with one fitted (More on that later).
I've never heard of them, it looks proper old school, and sounds really well. Well, the copy of "The best of Snap!" that I found down the back of the dash sounds good.
I've read the Wikipedia entry on them. They're rare on ebay. What's the score?
Cheers.

Nakamichi always made great audiophile-grade hifi for both car and home.
Their big thing was tape decks, quirky looks and big price.
I seem to remember them not to be particularly reliable and difficult to get spares for.

They're curse word.* Really, really curse word.* I'll do you a favour and have it off you. *They're actually frickin SUPERB!! In the 1980's I used to fit car audio for a living. We stocked Nakamichi and quite honestly they weren't that good. Tape decks were Ok but radios were appalling. Alpine units were cheaper and better. Pioneer tape decks were as good or better but Pioneer radios were pants. Kenwood was Trio back then and had just started selling in the UK. Kit was somewhere around the Alpine level. Nakamichi is an interesting piece of nostalgic kit though and would be great for a period install.

The cd headunits they used to make in the late 90s were always regarded as being pretty much as good as it gets in terms of sound quality. I know they used to have high quality d/a convertors in them, which not all cd decks do. Having ripped apart my fair share of head units (of various makes) they all seem to use similar quality components with the exception of really cheap brands. The reliability issue with them was more with the single din 6 disc head unit from what I remember, but looking on ebay a vast amount of nakamichi gear is always listed as being for parts or not working and even then they make big money.

Thanks for all the input guys. Here I was thinking it was a pile of 90's Korean junk, and it turns out to be quite a score. I'll let you know how I get on with it when I actually get some time behind the wheel - the MOT station's gas analyser was down this morning so no test on the Porsche.
