Apologies if there's already a thread for this but its new to me lol. Stumbled on this while looking up donks for the lifted thread. The principal seems to be overfuelling your diesel to produce smoke. The childish part of me loves this:-) makes me think of the truck in Duel:-) Some great examples on YouTube too:-)

Still cool though.

Too much fuel and not enough boost , but looks mighty cool!

I guess on a lot of street cars its done for silliness, but for tractor pulls it's more likley down to the HUGE boost being run and the persuit of HUGE POWER! From This Place"These classes are utilizing engines that were designed for 466 cid and pushing them to 680 cid, and then they put 100-300 psi of boost on top of that, depending on the class" I've always liked tractor pulling.. I think that just made me like it a little more also just found this on a random Diesel forum, don't know how true it is but it sounds feasible.. "For an elemental fuel such as hydrogen, the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio is the hottest burning and maximum energy-releasing air/fuel ratio. Lean mixtures dilute and quench the mix with unused air; rich mixtures dilute and quench the mix with unburned fuel. Diesel fuels are a little different. They contain about 85% carbon and 15% hydrogen. At stoichiometry, all the oxygen is consumed. When you enrich the mixture beyond stoichiometry, you continue to consume all the oxygen, but the hydrogen in the fuel begins to preferentially consume the oxygen instead of the carbon. Hydrogen having a much greater heat content than carbon, you get more heat (and power) out of the combustion process and a higher temperature, despite the unburned carbon passively soaking up some of that heat. Fuel efficiency and emissions, of course, go to Helena Handbaskett."

Once they come to full boost, the smoke dissappears mostly - smoke is a sign of unburnt fuel, I.e. lack of air or in other words more fuel than air available to burn it. Once the turbo provides enough air, all fuel can be burnt = maximum power/efficiency. My turbodiesel has a boost-sensitive device that retards fuel delivery untill boost is present to avoid black smoke. It also senses atmospheric pressure to avoid smoke in high altitudes. If a diesel turbo engine smokes black under full boost - well, something's wrong Or the owner has a giggle. I'm tempted to make mine smoke black - but then I like the fact that it doesn't smoke at all, unlike those modern TDCDTTCDBLAHi lumps

this is a big thing in Northern Ireland, mixture of 306 dturbos, xzaras, zx and well basically any diesel combined with a straight through exhaust, screwed out fuel pump in the case of 306s and red diesel, agricultural diesel and ive even heard of people adding oil to their fuel to make it smoke better, cars often get 3 sides washed with the bootlid left "reeked" as a badge of honour...
"no smoke, no poke" ... apparently!
Wheras on the other end of the scale black smoke racing are amazing, can never tell which cloud is bigger, diesel fumes or tyre smoke, must admit i liked the original merc better though, this one seems to have been plagued with problems but they are dedicated thats for sure, driving that coach to the uk for the bdc!
