First off is where are you going to find a 1275cc Mini engine as they are getting scarce / expensive. Then weigh up the cost of a rebuild unless you know it's a good lump. An early Metro might be worth considering as a donor. Don't forget about diff ratio will probably need changing to get the best out of the larger capacity. Otherwise it's remove one and swop with another. I fitted a 1098cc engine and gearbox (after swopping diff) out of a 1100 into a 850 Mini and no serious problems. 1275 rad is bigger and I don't know if the original 998 will still be sufficent. I've got two books - Modify your Mini and Tuning the A Series engine both by David Vizard and recommend you read a copy. You local library should be able to order then for you if you don't want to buy. You never know you might want to simply modify your 998 engine instead Paul H

The 998cc can be made to go quite well. Loads of "tried and tested" ways of uprating. MG 1100 cylinder head is the same 12G295 casting as the 998cc Cooper item. LCB exhaust, carb swops, etc are all good fun to play with as plenty of parts avaiable secondhand.

Look up 'Clive Trickey ' as well, good book to read . Bare in mind that some stuff will not be relivant due to the fact you can get anything under the sun new or easily secondhand off the auction site .

Do the frigging akward jobs (oil pump, water pump, engine mounts, bulk head de-rust, etc) whilst the engine is out. It'll save skinned knuckles in the future.

You might also want to consider the brakes. I'm guessing a '79 Mini still had drums on the front. You can fit disc brakes from a Metro but you need to swap some lower arms and also if you fit discs you'll have to fit 12" or bigger wheels to fit over them.
