Hi Guys
Just removed a totally knackered fuel tank from my breadvan, While I was doing this I found a pipe on the inside of the o/s/r quarter panel down by the seatbelt mounting point which is rusted right through,(I can`t see it very well but can feel how rusty it is) I believe this has a breather pipe running through it??
Is the only way to replace it to cut off the lower section of the rear quarter panel for access?
Cheers Adrian

it does have a breather in it. on 99% of mk2/2f polos it has completely rusted away. personally I wouldn't replace it. it is clearly a design fault, so I'd go for the option of finding a better way or routing the breather pipe.

Hi Jon
I was thinking of removing the lower section of the rear quarter panel (needs rust repairs on the sill ends anyway) and replacing the pipe with a stainless one?
I really don`t want to leave the pipe and rusty bits inside the quarter panel
Cheers Adrian
P.s Any idea why that bit rusts out is it just water ingress from inside the rear wheel arch?

well, i've never bothered to fix the pipe on any that I have owned, so can't really comment on the best way to fix it. From what I have seen though, people who do tackle it, cut the rear quarter panel on the swage line. I need to do something with my one, but i wasn't planning on having the breather pipe running inside a metal pipe. I'm not really sure why they designed it like it. my plan was to have braided hose and the hose going through some sort of grommet.

i chopped the steel pipe out and ran a new breather along the same route, i'd do it again that way cos its a complete ballache connecting that pipe back up no matter which way you do it. car just passed the MOT like that, B-reg polo coupe S.

Got this on both my mk2 and my mk2f, its not part of the mot test and I've never bothered to fix it, no issues here
