Toyota Celica 2.0 ST Coupe, Automatic 1983 "Y-reg" with a claimed 15071 miles done. All paperwork from new. MOT Jan 2008, "needs a little TLC" Perfect colour - Pensioner Beige. WHAT SAYS THE PANEL ? Is this worth having, auto box etc. Be as nice or brutal as you can, Pics appreciated of what they look like standard, and what they could look like.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

83-Y would be a RWD drive wedgy one, right? If it is, you should JUMP ON IT IMMEDIATELY!

Forget it. Beige? Auto? Potential rust bucket? £595? Too much, even if it's minty.

A 25 year old Celica will be rusting nicely by now. Saying that this one has just got a years ticket.....
My '81 Celica was Ziebarted from new and still needed a tump load of welding and new wings etc.
Spares are getting tricky now as well, mech stuff OK as it was used on alot of models, but body parts are non-existent.
The 2ltr motor is OK but hardly a performance motor like the 2TG Can't imagine to much go with a spakamatic behind it. Probably worth an engine swap if the rest is OK.
On the plus side. It looks cool and it's the last of the RWD Celica's.
It could be a minter in which case £595 would be good. It could also be a basket case underneath.

.....also if it does turn out to be a lemon bosh it on the 'bay with the words RWD, not AE86, drift, Initial D etc and reap some scene tax

^ exactly ^ Stuff like this is going to get increasingly hard to find. £600 is not a mountain of money for anything. If it's a nice, low-miles car with a full ticket the value can only go in one direction, and that's in your favour.

A T&T auto 3dr in Ipswich was on eBay a while back, only got one bid at about £350. Despite the RWD etc most people can't see the potential in them. I personally wouldn't worry about auto 'box (they do have overdrive for cruising). They do rot, tailgates badly so if it's a 3dr, and as it's an 80's J-mobile probably anywhere around the arches, sills, rear suspension mounts (check top of dampers in the boot), boot floor and bottoms of strut towers. Even though it's low mileage it'll probably need a bit of coaxing to get it back into regular decent use, even if it's not your daily - figure on possibility of thermostat, radiator, battery, clutch, maybe even a head gasket. Are these chain or belt drive?
Try more like £400 - you're not trying to be best mates with the seller, the worst that can happen is he'll tell you it's not enough and it'll sit there for a while longer.
I don't think the standard wheels do them any favours - bolt something more appropriate on there, get it closer to the ground and I think it should look good.
Just hooked out a brochure - it's a 21R engine, 103bhp, about 12sec 0-60 and top whack 103mph, weighs 1100-odd kg. Scans to follow......

Looks like they're fairly well-specced - PAS, electric windows and sunroof, remote mirrors.

Making use of the Archive 80's book I got off Rmad..... Turbo version! On a Y-plate I imagine your's will have the exposed headlamps. This one was at Billing last year.

Those notchback coupe things have potential. Not sure how you'd go about finding the front panels but you make it into a replica Group B car. I think everything from the doors back is standard. Or you could just keep it biege and buy a blanket for the back seat.

Amazing how having that back bit in a different colour totally corrects the slightly awkward looking rear end they have. If someone buys this car, I demand they do that!
