Because I don't have enough trouble with what I got, I have to increase my woes.
Or rather I have to find something that drives. I suspect it could be weeks before the Chrysler is back and running and ready to roll.
So a quick spin through the local rag suggests a man with a few quid in his hand could nab any of the following...
FORD CORTINA Mk4, 1.6GL, MOT May, tax Feb, tidy car, used daily, £375.
MARINA 1.3, 2 dr, 1973, L reg, taxed and mot'd, good runner, classic insurance, £395
SAAB 900 2.0L B-Reg, nearly tax exempt. 5 months on Mot. Good condition, solid body work, excellent runner, 2 owners from new. Cheap insurance £495 Ono. .
VOLVO 360 C reg, green, 5dr, 75k, tax & MOT April, 2 previous owners, SH, vgc, £300.
NISSAN BLUEBIRD F reg, MOT Sept, tax 6mths, good cond, £350 ono with CD player or £250 without.
BMW 520I 1987, e reg, 6 mths MOT, no tax, 133k, new parts, offers, ring for details
FORD orion, b reg, mot june, good cond for year, 1600, auto, £175 ono.
Obviously the Cortina stands out as the obvious FTW purchase and £375 is starting to look cheap for a Mk4.
Marina could be fun. Although the only person I know who owned one recently had no end of bother with it.
Saab, non-turbo and why waste a few words in a line ad with something thats not true... Never Tax Exempt more like.
Volvo 360? OAP tramp drifter?
Meh, probably only going to keep whatever it is a couple of months so wants to be somethign I can sell on easily.
I'm defo thinking that Cortina has to be first call...

MARINA FTW. A bit underpowered for it's size, and a propensity towards dubious handling. You'll be right at home in it!

360 Might bore you (sorry guys its just comfy and wobbly in standard form IMO) but it would also offer exactly what your fleet currently cant i would have another rock steady 360 afte an nice 7 year break

MARINA FTW. A bit underpowered for it's size, and a propensity towards dubious handling. You'll be right at home in it! Marina is the most 'exciting' for me, but as a hassle free daily? maybe as a gap daily. Tina, you said ya self that they make good dailys, and you know what to look for. Oh and that RARRE orion is a bargain if its not ready for the scrappers!!! shame I cant interest you in summat newer. (mk6/7 Cortina )

Or how about a 2nd generation Civic Hondamatic in blue, with tax and test? (No not the one for sale on here, a much cheaper one!) Marina or Cortina would be the ones for me I think..... I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of sensibly-priced classics in the Anglia Ad Trader this week - a 105E pick-up shell and a complete rotten saloon, £400-odd each; A30 for £495 running; An MOT'd 100E for £795 (ouch, makes me wish I was healthy and didn't have a Mondeo). Must be a good time of year for daily driver / project buying!

Marina koop could be fun but I'd actually be tempted by the Orion. Saw a mk1 Orion this morning and it occurred to me that I hadn't seen one in a very long time! Always preferred the Orion grille to the Escort ones.

Retro logic for the win!
I've always fancied a Marina Coupe, so that would be my first port of call. Then the Cortina, providing one of them is what it appears to be (solid, fair nick etc) it should fire you back up with some fun rides.
Best of british old boy ;D

definately british! marinas are cheap, tail happy basic to work on & you could have a bloody quick motor for not much coins, k-series injection on the marina & its daily reliable, large enogh to cart curse word about in too, your wheel choice is'nt great but engine & box is great, nissan silva turbo & box should go in without much fuss, mx5 engine & box ermmm lots of options there if your prepared for a little graft you could have a grandady car that eats mondern kit! i'd love to see a marina up a drag strip in 15secs or less, would curse word a good few people off morris ital is another good-un mazda b2000 pickup with a 200sx turbo motor? thats my 2pence worth for now!

Got to be Cortina or Marina – you’ve had MkIII’s before so ought to know what to look for. Certainly don’t see a MkIV too often, chuck some Ghia alloys on and it would look good. Or those nice Exactons that Seth had?
Can’t imagine there’s much to go wrong on a Marina 1.3 is there? 2dr adds to the appeal of that, and is there a chance you could determine its build date to see if it’s ’72 build and therefore tax exempt?
Alternative thought: Did Datsuncherry sell his Sunny B310? There’s trouble-free motoring for you!

car needs to be stock really for cheapness of insurance, and also needs to be 1987 at the youngest for classic insurance purposes. My mates Marina managed to find things to go wrong - carb issues, dizzy stuck and then the clutch slave went and thats a box-out job to get to. Couple of other bits too IIRC. Not the end of the world but in 3 - 4 months of ownership it was a pain and that was a 55K mile 2 owner car. Here she is with enthusiastic owner and later motivated seller Steve... Spivic might be OK but its a way darn sarf there to fetch it and I'm not sure I can be arzed. B310 would be interesting, I never have managed to own proper J-tin yet (only Em's Gen 6 Celica and Mazda) Might be a little over budget too, I was trying to shoot something in the £250 bracket....

All the A series stuff is so easy to work on though. Sounds like you're mates one was just having a fit with having not been driven enough Tigran bought the Exactons off me if you fancied them for the Cortina option but I've got a nice set of Cosmics that will be for sale (once I've determined the new Firestones are still round) and will go on the Marina a treat! Good (two almost new) tyres and they use the stock wheelnuts too GO MARINA!

marinas are cheap, tail happy I remember Marinas as having terminal understeer And the seats felt like they were stuffed with cabbage leaves and cutlery in my mate's Marina.... Buy whichever one is in the best condition, that'll give you most chance of getting your money back when you sell.

Buy whichever one is in the best condition, that'll give you most chance of getting your money back when you sell. YES. At them prices, i'd spend teh next 24 hours on the blower and on teh road checking these vehicles out. infact i'll be extremely impressed if theres a report to read on em all with pictures! in a classifieds theres a chance some unfashioable ones will not be selling so easy, so you may have good pickings at your price.
