I know that the the Isuzu engine is the one to have, but are the other diesel engines fitted to MK3 Astras that bad? Just want something to start every morning and get me to work and back cheaply! How long do the Vauxhall diesel engines last? Are they thirsty?
Really don't want to use the Triumph through the winter!
Thanks

Had the GM unit in an Astra van, never had a problem with it! It was knackered after 180k miles and chucked smoke out the back most of the time, but it always got me where I needed to go and always returned about 50mpg on a run.

Sounds good, I know I've got a lighter right foot than a van driver and the cars only done 120K, so I should get a years motoring!

Afraid my knowledge of Vauxhalls ends with FE Victors! Wish I still had that red 1972 VX 4/90 from 35ish years ago.
So a MK3 Astra with a non turbo diesel will have the Vauxhall engine? And be reliable and economical but slow?
As long as I get the first two, don't care about the last, I'm only going to work in it.

you will do, they're a slug. we had a isuzu td engine did 210k, and was stood for 2 years when we parked the rotted astra up. when we hooked a new battery up to it 2 years later started immediatly. The is a guy on here who has put one into a tax exempt viva estate, which is what we were going to when we found one.

In comparison to other indirect injection units I found the Isuzu engines unrefined. They do seem to go, but off boost they really do have zero power to them (My Mini 998 at similar revs to an Astra TD off boost would be easier to handle at junctions etc.). Maybe I got lucky, but my 306 DT with the XUD engine seemed better off boost and a litte more refined (servicing them seems to play a large role there though IME).
On boost they are not too bad, and will do motorway jaunts all day long. The MPG of them is fine too.

Used to buy and sell the 1.7 d Astra estates all the time years back and they were top top motors, slow yea but will do motorway speeds fine and were great on juice. Be totally fine for a daily.

Had a MK3 1.7D back in the day. The'Gutless wonder' as it was called
Excellent mpg, but made about as much progress as an asthmatic ant with several bags of heavy shopping
Reliable tho

I really don't remember them being that bad, mine was happy on the motorway and around town, mind you I did play with the pump timing a bit which did help a lot. The original 1.6D vauxhall from the MK1 astra's and MK2 cavalier's never seemed that slow at the time either, I think a lot depends on how you drive and what you are used to.
