The 480 was based on the 440/460 platform which was the replacement for the 3-series. Engines were the Renault 1.7 litre up to 1993, and 2-litre afterwards. Built in Holland at the old DAF factory, the same as the 3-series was. Early ones suffered loads of electrical gremlins, but I should imagine most of those have been sorted by now. Looking at the prices, seem to be one of those cars that suffered from the grandad image most Ovlovs had/still have. I've never driven one, but have had three 360's in the past (two GLT's and a GLE), they were brilliant cars- the last one (a D-reg 360GLT) had done 220k when it finally bit the dust. Bit of a bargain IMHO, and definitely different...go for it!

Agreed.
Watching the 102k one.....
Should be a decent place to start making a silly car.

Volvo 480 Turbo's are awesome little cars, HOWEVER............. 1. Make sure the electrics work, the semi-digital dash can be a bit of a nightmare! 2. Check the carpet front, back and boot, they can leak really badly (my turbos like a swimming pool after a heavy show ;D ) 3. And most importantly get a Turbo (once the boost is wound up they are an animal) Check out the forum on www.volvo-480-europe.org very helpful bunch

I had a black 2.0l ES which I fitted with thehalf leather interior. They are ace cars and on a private test track can comfortably hit 115 without making it scream.

There's one in my local paper, sounds like an old-duffer-mobile (silly low mileage and full MoT).... £395. But it ain't a turbo.

I suspect TURBO's nice, but 1700 and 2000's are just good regular runners.
To me they are in the all show, needs less go category, however of course...... loadsa go would be nice if set in a reliable package.

I love that squished 850 I've often wondered about a 480 - are they FWD or RWD? The 300 were RWD, but I don't know about any of the 4xx series.

4 series are FWD unfortunately... but strangely likeable cars the 480... everyones already mentioned the troubles, but I've also seen them leak onto the ECU's Richmod ECU gives a good upgrade to 170bhp for around £80 Also they rust like anyones business.... Briandamaged - impressive mileage out of your 360GLT My mates 340 1.4 has done over 200k now too

I have a lot of time for the 480. The Turbo is excellent, and I believe quite wild with the "Richmod". My missus has had 480s for the last couple of years, just the standard 1.7i variant. Yes there can be a lot of electrical problems (just trying to get the screen washers working on our latest one!), and they can rot, but they are much better cars than their low prices might suggest. Watch out for doors dropping as well, they are so heavy they can break the welds on the A post hinge mounts and then the door wrecks the wing. (I'll post a pic in a bit).
They are FWD, but certainly in standard trim don't seem to suffer from torque steer, as the driveshafts are near equal length.
Oh, and watch out for ones with cracked screens, I've heard that this can be a sign of some serious corrosion. Electric windows pack up, usually by snapping the bowden cable on the motor. usual remedy is to swap the motor, but these are stupid money new. You may be able to swap the cable over, although I've never tried this. Motor swaps are fairly easy, did my first one yesterday and it took about 20 minutes.

Richmod ECU gives a good upgrade to 170bhp for around £80 Also they rust like anyones business.... Mine is rich modded, runs just short of 14psi of boost. Had it off the clock at an "indicated" 140+ mph WTF........ before anyone has a go at me read below...... Disclaimer: I know the car was not doing 140 mph as all speedo are out by about 10%. This I am sure of cause in november I got done for speeding the speedo said 110 mph the cops laser gun said 99.97 mph, got off lightly 3 points and a £60 fine. THANK FOOK! As for the rust comment.... yes the early ones do rust but the late ones IMO are quite resistant to tin worm.
