Just a general question to the mass as too what they would prefer as there everyday car?
I have been running my Matiz (Julie) for the last 12 months with no problems. Cambelt changed, oil changed, brakes changed. 59k, near full history. Just completed a sale on eBay for a 2001 1.4 Skoda Fabia Classic (Sarah). Awaiting collection! 123k, T&T (long) slight rattle sound from engine (hoping its just the chain that needs a service) Read a bit about the common faults on Fabia, thermostat, head gasket, window regulators. Which don't faze me. We don't use the car much as I cycle and wife only uses it to collect kids from mosque. But the thought of letting Julie go makes me realise how good she is and will Sarah be the same.
What would you do?

We've got a 2005 1.4 Fabia Classic diesel and it's a great car so that get's my vote. In 3 years only problem has been battery, tyres, one coolant hose, bulbs and rear brakes. One of the best car's we've ever had and only regret it it's not an estate as the extra room would be useful (so I could get my mobility buggy in the back). Wife now says she only wants Skoda's.

How old are the children? My memory of a Matiz as a hire car vs a 2002 Fabia my mate has, is the Fabia is noticably bigger. Will that be an issue as they grow/want "dad's taxi" service for their mates?
Do either of the cars hit a sweet spot for insurance or tax?
Is there any chance of running the two 'side by side' for a month just to let you see which you really prefer?

Kids are: Boy 6 Girl 4 Boy 3 Still got a few years on the 'dads taxi' statue. Can't run both cars as multiple insurance is out of the question. I've just rung my insurance company and the Fabia is cheaper, I get a £22.94 refund on the annual price I paid, wow! The reason I bought Julie is because I thought she would be cheaper but it's come to light that I was wrong!!!! But she has been a damn reliable motor.

Sounds like the decision is made!
I guess the other thing to consider is how easy is it to work on them (assuming you're doing DIY)? Was this model of Fabia the Polo based one? If so should be easy to find Skoda/VW/Seat bits and probably more common in breakers.
What about the Matiz? Does that share its platform with any other vehicles?

Fabia parts easy and cheap to source. Also everything on ours (1.4 TDi) also easy to work on. I'm obviously biased but reckon build quality will be far superior to the Matiz.

I do like a good Skud missile, back when the Fabia was introduced I nearly sticthed myself up on a big finance deal but I couldn't bring myself to it as the one I longed for was never going to be an option I wanted the 20V Turbo engine in the VRS but they dealt with the devil and made it derv I've had many Skoda's over the years and my first was an orange Rapid followed by a Favourit and a Felica, I will own an Octavia VRS at some point thou.
