I bought this car to be a reliable commuting car AND cut my motoring costs; both of these things it has done in spades. A baby on the way in November and the offer of a larger VAG TDi at a price I can't refuse are the only reasons for sale. It won't win you any races but it starts, drives quietly (but not quickly!) and stops, steers and brakes as it should. Two minor mechanical issues to note; 1) The starter motor is sometimes slow to react to the turn of the key meaning the motor doesn't quite catch first time. It just means you have to turn the key again. It always starts so no biggy. 2) The rear, driver's side brake makes a grinding noise, especially during the first use of the day. This is the only issue I can think of that needs attention but brake parts for these are cheap and whatever it is hasn't affected the braking peformance. It passed the MOT like this and brakes well and straight.
As mentioned above the car had a new engine (supplied and fitted for free by Vw) at circa 75k so although the car has done 140k miles, the engine hasn't. I have a letter from the Vw dealer proving this and I'm told that this was down to a previously bad repair, carried out by the dealer in question, which caused the original engine to fail! Consequently the engine is only on around 65k miles and drives as such. The Vw service history ends at about the same time (75k) and I can only assume the owner lost faith in the dealer (can't blame her really!). I had a full service carried out in January 2013 including plug leads and a water flush / fresh antifreeze added due to the harsh winter. Other parts I've added include a rear wiper motor, catalytic convertor exhaust section (still under warranty) and only yesterday(!) a new exhaust backbox. It is also worthy of note that this car had the infamous pedal box replaced in 2008 so you should have no worries there. The recent MOT brought up only trivialities but nevertheless, I have corrected each and every one. If you want a reliable Polo you could do alot worse than this one!
Interior
Not outstanding but is clean, tidy and functional with the later style twin binnacle dash and light blue dash lighting. Everything, including the original vw stereo, works well.
Body
The body is still very presentable and shines up lovely but being 13 years old it does have it's fair share of wear; scuffs, minor dings and sratches. The worst things to note are paint peel on the bumpers and a dent on the passenger rear quarter where I had a coming together with my garden fence. As mentioned none of this really detract from the car's looks and it's still a bright wee thing. I will however get some pictures of the less attractive areas and post them up later.
Now then, the more astute amongst you will have noticed that the car is sporting 'Starsky & Hutch' side stripes which I had done for a retro 70s party (my 40th) and I kinda liked them so they stayed. This has been done with proper vinyl, vehicle graphic material and is removable. I'll let the new owner decide whether they stay and will even throw in a magnetic blue flashing roof light at the right price. Let me tell you, you have never lived until you have lent out of your driver's window and attached a blue flashing light to your roof. Please be aware that the car in it's current guise WILL get you noticed. If you want to go about your daily business without people pointing I suggest you remove the stripes!
All humour aside, this is a good reliable car for someone with long MOT and tax for little money. Hand me very close to £695 and drive away a bargain.
