I know fak all about truck dervs but I am going to need one, so here is the list of requirements if people would like to make suggestions. Needs to be already RWD with a 5 speed (or more) gearbox on it. Needs to be simple to install so no computer controlled pumps and doohickys unless the loom and ECU are really easy to instal with it. Needs to be fairly cheap and robust. It's going in the hole a small block and auto box came out of, so I have plenty of width but length may be an issue. (fnar fnar) Would be nice if it would run on veg, but really not that important as it's not likely to happen very often anyway. It will be pulling a block shaped 3 tons around and occasionally have to shift up to 5 tons so plenty of torque and I guess 150 to 200bhp maybe? I don't want to be stuck at 50mph on the motorways but at the same time I'm not looking to burn rubber. I'm not that worried about MPG but I'm not gonna be fitting some monster power stroke V8, so sensible ideas please. Can't think of anything else at the moment, so if you can think of anything that fits what I need then please shout.

Mercedes OM603/6, 606 come with electronic pumps as standard but the 603 is mechanical, but being a car diesel is probably too small for what you want. Nissan Patrol, I think some of these had a 4.2 small truck engine anyway? Cummins 4BT, like a 6BT but with two less cylinders, and also seems to have a forum based on fitting them to other stuff 4btSwaps.comGMC 6.2/5 V8, plenty fitted to rusted out Range Rover's Perkins 6.354/4.236 or other derivatives, also fitted to Land Rover's Some or all of these may not be suitable, but they are the first ones that jump into my mind

Hi agree with Sowen. the only other one I would suggest is 2.5 or 2.8 Iveco daily engine.

Perkins Phaser from the Renault Dodge 50 (not the 6.247 as fitted to my rangie, unless you can find the Mazda/ Hino turbo variant), wouldn't bother with the 4.236 with 5 ton on the go it'll be a bit over worked + unless you get very lucky they are governed quite low.

I would assume that getting an engine/gearbox combo for a 'sensible' price will be difficult, my OM605 with manual 'box cost me £350, then another £150 for the matching mechanical pump.

It needs to be 500 quid or less for engine and box really. If i have to buy a whole van/truck and scrap the rest i can do that and 5 ton would be max if I added a trailer, its going to be 3 ton ish 90% of the time.

Don't forget the logistics of shifting multiple tons of old knacker truck to your place then on to the frag yard minus brakes, if its big enough its going to air brakes too, unless you've got a suitable vehicle already to solid bar move it. Not sure what the Ford Cargos have in them - is the RV staying then?

The RV may be staying, but not in it's current form, basically its to big for what i need now (it's over 8ft wide which makes using it on normal roads a bit of a pain) and to big really to park out on the street locally, also the scrap men wont take it with the body on the back due to all the wood and plastic so it has to be stripped down anyway.
If a suitable engine can be found at reasonable money the two options currently being floated are to build a smaller body on the back house truck style or to just fit a flat bed and some ramps and flog it off as a car transporter however that entails finishing the hole in the roof and rear of the cab to a good standard.
The third and probably over ambitious and not very sensible option is to strip the cab off as well as it has full chassis, find a pickup truck front cab of some kind and build a LWB dually.

Iveco Sofim ticks all of those boxes. KFW and Dez are both fans IIRC so there's a bit of knowledge about here for them as well as elsewhere online.

Do you want to sell it as it is? I may know of someone for it who was fancying a project I dare say I would sell it, I'll get some photos of its current condition and will be open to an offer. Ooh see, now i found these, the chassis is long enough to support a pick up cab and a beaver tail and has the weight capacity to carry a decent sized car as well I reckon AND it wouldn't need a big engine to push it through the air. 67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=291544
