From Bromley Pageant last weekend; a 'barn find' Aston DB5 went at auction for £325k and will cost another £200k to restore. I say don't; while the patina was incredible, condition-wise the car really didn't look that bad. As a comparison, it sat alongside an over-restored version, with lustrous paint and chrome wires; I know which one I preferred. Well to save a couple of bob to spend on y'know, secret agent-type stuff, just do the MOT work and leave as is. Then roll up at the next AMOC meeting in a tweed jacket and leather trousers with an effigy of a certain secret agent hanging from a noose from the rear-view mirror. And wait for the champagne flutes to hit the floor. The anti-Bond car, if you will.- Amazosan

I'd maybe pressure clean the wheels and give it a polish, but I'd much rather see it on the road in its current state rather than over restored and never driven

Gorgeous. Even the colour is much prefered over the 'standard' silver that the majority of DB5s get painted post restoration. Is it a runner then?
Thank you for sharing, you know what we like round these parts...

I'd go for a mechanical restoration, check the Superleggera structure for hidden rust, then a clearcoat to protect the paint and drive it all day long. It is perfection!
I dearly hope someone who puts this much money in an unrestored preserved car knows its value.

I've seen a couple of episodes of 'Chasing Classic Cars' where the boy wants the car presented at auction exactly like this, he feels that cleaning any of it would affect the value.
There was a Stingray just like this on 'Fast'n'Loud' that ended up with an unwanted painted engine block when they were trying to present it as a drivable barn-find, which is sort of oxymoronic. They had to age the engine block to minimise the effect it would have on the resale value. The rest of the car was aged but the engine block ended up with a brand new orange paint job.

325K I had no idea these were so valuable. I mean, i knew they were high end very desirable cars, but not to this point. Anyways, i too would just clean, polish and change the rubber parts and keep it as is.

I'm trying to figure out how it could possibly cost 200 large to restore that? It's all there, looks straight and presentable and even if the chassis is badly rotted, it can't be that complicated to put right. Are rich people stupid?

It's all there, looks straight and presentable and even if the chassis is badly rotted, it can't be that complicated to put right. Are rich people stupid? No, it will be taken completely apart and all its parts reconditioned, it won't just be checked over and undersealed it will be rebuilt to better than factory spec for that kind of money and it's the time taken that costs the money, at £100 an hour doing 8 hour days a 6 month resto will cost almost that. I agree about it being more interesting if its left with its patina though.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

There have been cases of barn-find classics of this ilk fetching as much as (if not more than) restored examples, the thinking being that an unrestored example is a blank canvas for the quirks and peccadilloes of one's own restoration style.
I could also waffle on for ages about the recession-fuelled rise in values of blue chip classics and so forth, but I'm sure you can fill in the blanks yourself. But don't just look at premium classic cars as the realm of enthusiasts - they're also commodities for speculators and investors. The rate of 'interest' in pouring half a million into a DB5 and hanging onto it for five years may well be significantly stronger than sticking it in the bank or investing in shares/etc.

The classic car market is somewhat weird at the moment. High-end car prices are skyrocketing, and even lesser cars are really getting expensive. I know Top Gear mentioned that the Mercedes 300SL is one of the best investments these last few years, I found that in 2007 this car was for sale at around $284k... I hope things get more normal sometime soon, it's quite stressful to own a car that gets too expensive when you don't have much income.

I know of two people who openly admit to using classic cars as an investment vehicle (pardon the pun) rather than property/shares etc. Spend time looking for the right one and don't be in a rush to sell so you can find the rich buyer and you can make a good few £. Certainly more interesting that owning a rat infested flat in a dodgy area for rental.
Back to the Aston - yeah I'd drive it like that, looks nice and original.

If I had the cash that would be on the deck and rattle canned black rolling on tsw venoms machined for knock ons. Just to curse word the world off. Oh and fit a mercedes v12 for a laugh. Seriously though this is destined to spend the next year being restoredd and the rest of its life being driven onto a trailer then off again. Waste
