	Sorry about this thread as it has no retro content other than I am after a plasma cutter for cutting steel for making repair sections for retro cars. If any mods deem it OT please lock or delete as appropriate. Right basically I know naff all about plasma cutters but fancy getting one. What do I need to look for. I want to use it mainly for sheet steel 1-2mm but also flanges for manifolds etc. 8mm Does anyone have much experience in using them. What size compressor will I need. I have a decent size Clarke compressor (only 2hp but a genuine 10CFM at 10 Bar) but don't know if thats enough. Are the ones with in built compressors worth a look. 	i use a plasma at work quite often, when you first use on you will wonder how you ever managed with out one. thing toi check is that you can get tips shrouds etc for it, if they are expencive don't bother with it. They do cut for ages until they go, but its a factor to look into. don't think they actualy use a lot of air...

	They don't use a lot of air, you can get "site" plasmas with a built in com[pressor but check all the service part costs and availability. I've nearly bought one a couple of times but always had a more urgent call on the money, bah!

Got to admit I have nearly got one myself a few times and decideed my money could be better spent elsewhere. But at the minute most of my projects need welding. And I reckon I have got best part of a year and a halfs welding ahead of me to get through them (that may be conservative as well ). So I reckon now might be a good time to get one. Had a look in machine mart and they have two single phase machines. One will do 4mm (400 + Vat) One will do 12mm (600 + Vat) and they both use 4CFM@ 6.2 bar. If nowt else turns up I might get some money together for the next VAT free night
