ive got this ww2 era ratchet , didnt realise until i got home that the detent ball that holds on the socket is missing any crafty ideas for fitting a new one , I'm told the hole was flared over originaly?

Thats sick! pretty jealous here....
Perhaps ask (and this might sound weird) a jeweller or watch maker. They'd have the tools and stuff i assume to heat/cool things as well as accurately solder them.
He could run a bead of solder around the hole, and then perhaps heat the sq drive and cool a ball bearing and drop it in?
all depends on the difference in size between what the diameter of the ball should have been and what the hole is now.

Great find! I'd try an oldfashioned bicycle repairshop. The oldfashiond way of repairing a worn bearing is to replace the balls for a slighly bigger type. At least that was the way it was done here in Holland. The sizes should match the size needed, I guess. Is the spring still present?
The bearingballs make an excellent MacGyver trick for when brakebleed nipples have broken, by the way. Drop a bearing all in, firm down with a sizeble bolt... MOT-proof, over here...
