Right, flogging my brother in laws Escort Van for him. Put a wheel bearing in it today and took it for a spin. It's pretty slow, first gear up some inclines? Only selling it for cheaps so not throwing cash at it, it is what it is, an 100k '98 Escort van for a few hundred quid. Just wondered if the pumps on these can be played with slightly to improve it a little so it's not hanging around for too long.
It's a 98 1.8 NON TURBO. Runs fine, recent service inc all filters. Only bad bit is the glow plugs are a bit curse word. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it's not right they're bad but not that bad standard. Could be a blocked exhaust or something.

Must be a bloody steep hill or something aint right there, my Mk4 non turbo pulled fine, slow to rev but still pulled fine even with 2 peeps and a V6 cologne and box in the back it never struggled that bad (except when stone cold), on the non turbo the adjustment is inside the pump, on the turbo the off boost fueling is outside but max fueling is inside under the plastic cap?

You can wind the pump up, on the front of it is a 19mm iirc nut, undo this a trickle of diesel will come out, inside is a 6mm allen head, clockwise for more go, anti for less

Later engines had a different pump which you can't adjust, at '98 it might have one. I had on as my first car and it was horrendously slow! I timed 0-60 (indicated) and it came in at about 23 seconds! Foot was flat to the floor to keep at 70 on the motorway. I was regularly overtaken by lorries on hills when carrying some weight.

Cant see anything on the pump, round plastic cap type thing, looks like a breather almost, on the front facing the rad, same thing on the back corner next to the pump head.
Exhaust does sound farty, although no leaks. I'll delve a bit further tomorrow maybe.

If all he want is a couple of £100 then why bother? Cash the tax in take the good bits of and frag the rest and you've made a profit, there's no point messing with it.

They seem to go for between £400-£500 round here in ropey nick. I did all the floors and sills a couple of years ago, and replaced the engine after cambelt failure with a 55k unit (lack of TD's available at the time meant no TD swap). Brakes front and rear are new, interior is really clean and good tyres on Finesse alloys it should go easily to a local tradesman etc for £500-£600 so not worth breaking up. Even if they scrap it after a couple of years it's only cost them £250-ish a year.
Looks to have the later pump and the exhaust seems free so guess it's just how it is
