I need a replacement front bench for a 70 Datsun pickup,  the original is totally soaked in oil and I've been quoted about £500 to reupholster it inc new padding etc.  Wondering what other trucks (or anything) might have a front bench, unfortunatly I expect anything to be new enough that the seat will still be in good nick, will not have a bench seat! But any suggestions welcome, then i can look for someone breaking that vehicle. |

Have you considered the rear seat out of a large estate car ? Obviously brackets etc would have to be made but something like a Volvo 740 estate might donate a suitable seat.

Or a bench out the back of a vw microbus that someone has done a camper conversion on? (I picked one up and passed it back on after I'd finished with it in freecycle section on volkszone forum)

as you say, most newer stuff will have split fold seats, but there's always the lower spec models that often have single piece seats, like base to mid model 306's, 405 saloons, Xantia's possibly, zx's.

Whilst back seats out a saloon are a good idea they are designed to fit the car bodywork so you'd need to make a support frame duplicating the area of the bodywork they fit. The reason I suggested large estate rear seat is they fold and already have such a frame. I reckon trip to scrap yard with tape measure needed  Paul h |

Looked at several estate car seats already, they all have a piece carved out for the wheel tubs, and also have fairly flimsy construction as most are not self supporting as they rely on being latched into position to the side of the car. I need something that can self support AND has fore-aft adjustment , which would be really hard to add, if you look at the lack of framework on the average car back seat. Also many seats are too wide.
What model of VW do you think might have a suitable back seat?
I did think of cannabalising some good sponge and upholstery from a back seat to repair my bench but finding one the right shape is tricky.

loads, well a few, bay minibuses are being shipped over and most
end up converted into camper vans so worth checking aircooled vw
forums, even volkszone if you're desperate.

That is expensive. I had the bench seat for my 1200 pickup re-upholstered for £250. They must have used new foam as the original was absolutely shagged.

SMX front seats. They are seperate but due to the fact that the seats are designed to make a bed are also basically a bench seat. Fully adjustable etc.  (I no longer have an SMX so cannot measure sorry!) |
