I ammoyed people elsewhere by proving the cost per mile of my 7 litre Oldsmobile was lower that the cost per mile of their economy hatchbacks LOL. Thats the benefit of cheap classic insurance, free road tax and doing your own servicing... Doesn't it get up their bloody noses tho........ Sheesh!!

My daily primera 1.8 20,000 mile per year Daily Use @ 28mpg A year: 3112.54 A Month: 259.38 A Mile: 16p Per day: £8.55 Monza 3,000 mile per year Couple of days a week @ 22mpg A year: 753.12 A Month: 62.76 A Mile: 25p Per day: £7.24 Primera is about right. Difficult to say on the monza due to the fact I have no intention of selling and I will probably spend more on it than my daily. Petrols a killer, need to get a cheap diesel as my daily again. At the minute I fork out around £250+ per month on fuel and the wife around the same. £500 a month on petrol/diesel, I remember the days when I could make a fiver last a week

This has been my point many times over, yet even when presented with cold hard financial facts people still don't believe me. Even factoring in local garage costs it's often cheaper than there modern alternative... The thing that makes me smile is that I often do ten times more miles a year than they do. Mind you this means there's more retro fodder for us

ive had the retro Vs modern argument with people i work with. after a discussion last week it turns out that it costs me less to do the 50 mile round trip in my 2.3 W123 than it costs one of the girls in her 1.4 renault scenic people carrier thing. there was much dummy spitting and i was accused of lying! so i agree, it doesnt half get up their noses. ;D

Did some sums, interesting stuff. Only marginally cheaper 'per mile' to run our Focus than the BMW over big mileages. BUT... There are other considerations.... Imagine if you ran your retro for 3 years / 36000 miles at the same level of neglect that you could 'get away with' on a newer car? What about if something unspeakable happens - replacing a V-reg Vectra is hella lot easier than trying to find another VW K70 And ayone else got a retro car that contains hugely expensive bits (relative to the cost of the car)? Oh how I look forward to the day when my BMW parps it's engine and I'm faced with a £3500 bill for replacement.... Horses for courses, I say. OK, so we are not slaves to depreciation... but we're still slaves

Depends what retro you run. Moggie Minor, Mini, Cortina, Capri you can get a replacement engine for chump change, or rebuild the one in it yourself for not a lot of dosh. If your retro is an old Jag or something then yup, fear those engine rattles, they could be expensive...

Yea, with Alistairk on this one - all down to the complexity and availiability of your car.......Pretty much everything from panels to powertrains are still availiable for my car and there isn't anything I couldn't get 2nd hand, so no worries Hell, even a goodish lump would be 50 to 150 quid so no fear there either Sure you could get a 2nd hand known engine for your BMW for less than that!

The kicker on costs is the first field, purchase cost. OK so our Golf cost £13000 when we bought it 5 years ago but in real terms today that's long been written off. OK so it features in the overall cost to own but not in the real time day to day costs now.
Also with retros the fact that most are used infrequently pushes the daily cost up as the ratio of fixed costs (VED etc) to flexible costs (fuel) is altered.
Interesting though ZS just over £9 per day! The Golf weighs in at a massive £13 per day!!

as pointed out, its not all straight forward. But.... I got thinking yesterday, the save in depreciation, is related to the eco cost on the environment imo. so yeah chuggin about in v8's etc is not ideal in green eyes, but carrying on recycling regardless is. this is where appreciation is beneficial as its worth fixing yey. in the same breath spending £500 fixing a £450 car seems a bit silly, or is it? Appreciation wise i worry about replacement parts or full cars geting outta reach...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Well, as I cycle to work, and only use it on Saturdays, my £800 Bimmer slaughters all your daily costs....
Your car is costing you: A year: £ 2266.53 A month: £ 188.88 A mile: £ 0.32 Per day of use: £ 43.59
I didn't factor in the cost of the stereo in it either...... or the cost of shiny non essential bits.

or the camper, which only comes out on high days and holidays and was financed by a £3000 loan is eyewatering. The figures are actually worse than this because average use is less than one day a week.
Feck me, it was bought to provide cheap holidays!
Your car is costing you: A year: £ 3414.58 A month: £ 284.55 A mile: £ 1.14 Per day of use: 65.67
