Fantastic little motoring 'reality' costs calculator here. Bung in your mpg, how much the car appreciates/depreciates, insurance etc and it works out the cost per mile and per day on your car: img.thisismoney.co.uk/calculators/calcCarCost.html26p per mile and £6.16 per day on girlfriend's modern daily @38mpg, £1500 -> £500 over 3 years 11p per mile and £1.69 per day in the 1954 Ford Pop, 1172cc sidevalve with 3 gears @30mpg, £1500 -> £2000 over 1 year 15p per mile and £2.40 per day by bike, 2002 ET4 Vespa 125cc @85mpg, £1000 -> £600 over 3 years 22p per mile and £3.58 per day in the 1967 Ford Anglia, hot 1700cc pre-crossflow + 4 gears @25mpg, £850 -> £1500 over 8 years All at 5000 miles if I used just the one vehicle. I stand by my "retros are cheaper" statement ;D What does yours come to?

crazy, pug 306, we bought it 8 years ago, for £8k, its probably worth £500 now, done 180k, does about 50mpg, servicing costs are about £25 (oil, filters) every 6k, i did the cam belt on it - £12, and the exhaust fell off - £32 + brakes and tyres..... other than that we just put diesal in it. it didnt cost dad much to ensure, but does cost me about £500 a year, so i evened that out to £350 a year...
aparently that has cost us £8 a day!!

Well the Sierra is cheaper to run than the Mondeo by 7p a mile.
In reality the difference is far greater, since unlike the Sierra, my Mondeo starts every morning, meaning I drive it more often and further! ;D

Hmmm ...Over many yrs of car owning ,I ve often tried to calculate the cost of the car sitting on my drive ,but I always come back to the "cost of the convenience" of owning a car.ie it may be financially costly etc ,but what about the days when its lashing with rain etc ,and you just use the convenience of it to go to the local shops etc?Personally 90% of the time I'm not bothered if I own a car or not ! Last yr we took a day trip to Southend on the train .We walked from the station to the sea front ,and as we crossed the very car park where we would have parked ,it took 1/4 hour longer to get there ,than if we had gone by car !I felt great not having to worry about the car ,its contents when parked etc .BUT I also remembered the days when it would have been CONVENIENT to have the car there ,with kids stuff etc in it . We cant put a price on convenience .Was I rambling ?? apologies if I was !!!.............

Also, there's the cost to mental health when the f*cker goes wrong and is sitting there staring at you every morning! ;D It's times like that when I wouldn't mind some dumb Euro-blob to get in, turn the key, and go... ...that urge soon passes though...

I'm fortunate enuf not to have to use a car to get to work (I live about 50 yds away!)So the morning stresses are removed! Id never own a late model car due to the ease of repairing retro type vehicles.to me ,working out the cost of running a car is like when I had a mortgage and tried to balance the bill paying every month .....frightening ! I payed out more than I earnt !

I think they might also give some sort of depreciation formula for brand new cars based on all sorts of things. Retro's don't tend to depreciate. They appreciate... so the market value for your Mini has gone up in price. Which means it will cost you less (in this calculation at least) because it factors in the value of your car when you come to sell it.

I ammoyed people elsewhere by proving the cost per mile of my 7 litre Oldsmobile was lower that the cost per mile of their economy hatchbacks LOL. Thats the benefit of cheap classic insurance, free road tax and doing your own servicing...

I'm not going to sing the praises of modern cars - if the Mondeo didn't start tomorrow, it'd be a bigger worry than the Sierra not starting, since I could check for a spark and not much else! But it's nice to have something which I can park in town and in dodgy back streets without being heartbroken when some f****r has bashed their doors into it or broken the mirrors off. Depreciation though - never a big worry with a retro car!
