Can it be done and if so what other bits need changing/ pulling from the donor car?
The water pump has gone on mine but the ally bolt that holds the cam belt cover on is seized (sp?) so if I try to fix the current 1.4 lump I'm gonna have to pull the head, get the bolt drilled out then get it skimmed and pressure tested.
Easier just to change the whole engine but the 1400 is a tad weedy and the gf wants a bit more power out of it.

didn't they fit that engine in a few anyway?
SEH isn't it?
I'd have thought a simple engine look and engine/box change would do it, but you may want to look a bigger brakes and such like too

Yep, 8v 2.0 was fitted in 'em as standard (my mate has a 2.0 Cesaro, my Mum has a 2.0 CDi). Someone on here did the conversion a while back, sorry but can't remember who! I know there's some different wiring between the 1.4 and 2.0 but nothing too complex.

IIRC you can take the old engine, loom and ecu out complete and install the new engine, ecu and loom.

It's important the engine loom matches the car loom.
From my experience Mk2 Astra engines don't wire into Mk3 Cavaliers and Mk3 Astra correctly.
However I think anything from the Mk3 Astra and Mk3 Cav should swap over nicely. Almost plug and play!
I'd like to do this conversion myself.

It's important the engine loom matches the car loom. Yeah, they didn't all use the same engine management system. Plus you have to remember the golden rule of '90s GM repair - just because the trim came apart OK doesn't mean it will go back together as easily! (I sold my Cav in 2003 and still find the odd clip / plug etc in my tool boxes....) ;D

Highly underrated engine the 2.0 8v.... everyone wets themselves over 'redtops' yet you can pick up a two litre astra or cavalier and have the same real-life performance for a fraction of the cost.
16v Astras are starting to fetch stupid money for non-tested rustbuckets. An 8v will lose in a straight 'traffic light drag' but is just as flexible for normal driving, and has plenty of grunt. It's only when you want to start lots of big numbers on a dyno sheet that you need the 16v.

Well said Pillock I share the same opinion and that's having done the XE conversion to an SRi130. The SEH is a nice torquey usable engine without the scene tax of the XE.
What JonnySierra says is so true LOL! Good old SnapOff connectors.

Skinny has pointed you in the right direction to a forum where many of the users have retro fitted various engines to MK3 astras.. inc V6's.

Meh. Leave it as is. Everyone who knows their shiZ, knows a 1400 HI-TORQ is the don of engines.
Oh... hang on.... ;D
I had a 1.4i Astra for a year or so... 20,000 miles without being able to find any more go beyond 85mph. Amazingly economical though.
