Ok ive got the chance of a redtop Vauxhall lump and was wondering if I should take the plunge and replace the 2300 slant and go for it. Ive got the 2300 running now and sounds sweet but id like a bit more power. Is it an easy job to do and what bits would I need to use? Id like toi keep the firenza as standard as I can but extra power would be good to have, make it a usable daily driver. Also thought about ca18dt engine but lot more involved I think. Ive finally got my mojo back on the car and need a little guidance from you guys as to what to do. cheers

I seem to remember the 2.3 is canted over on an angle? If you want more power you could look at the 2.3 turbo Volvo redblock which also leans over, they are RWD, cheap and its easy to up the boost. I suspect it may go in without body mods so you would have the option to return to original, mine shifts my 940 along all right and i reckon the Firenza is about 500kgs lighter.
Certainly would be a cheaper and easier swop than a redblock, you can buy a complete 940 turbo for about 500 quid, if you don't mind not using a Vauxhall engine of course.

by the time you've converted it all to run with the r'top toy might as well spend the money modding a 2.3. with a modded 907 TC head you can hit 250hp, (with other mods as well of coarse.) and when you sell it, it'll fetch more coin.

I like the idea of a tuned NA standard 2.3, would sound awesome, i think it depends on how much you want to spend though, redblock will do 250 with cam, chip and bigger turbo. I hated turbo engines until I found out how cheap these old lumps are to tune. :S

or you could take a leaf out of the panther lima's book (used magnum running gear)
they created the Lima Turbo by slapping in a set of bedford CF low comp pistons and bolting on a turbo and got ~180bhp (no intercooler)

Volvo lump would be cool but leans the wrong way and clearance will be an issue redtop is still a good engine but getting old now and most are 200k motors on their last legs so will prob need a rebuild before use....add to that trying to find a manta box to put it on along with the sump & mounts which will be mega bucks... Could put a Zetec in there for a fraction of the cost and with a little tweaking will make redtop power easily enough My two pence worth

Mines on 266,000 and still works just fine, 500k is nothing on a redblock if its been serviced properly, also you'd just use the M90 Volvo box (and maybe the axle, both will hold well over 400bhp) the guys over on the Volvo forum have been overboosting high milage engines for donkeys without issues.
I take your point about it needing clearance though, not something I've tried.

I'd leave the 2279 in it, it's a great engine. If you want more go, hunt down some performance parts and do it the old fashioned way. Redtop would be ok, 3.0 24v would be fun, Ford engine would ruin it.
(in my opinion)
If you ditch the slant 4, I'll have it.

I don't think using another manufacturers engine "ruins" any car, what most people want is the best balance between power, cost ease of fitting and weight and the good thing about RR is we all like different stuff so a lot of ideas get put forwards for consideration that maybe wouldn't otherwise get considered.
Also it's worth bearing in mind things change over time, i used to tout the Cossie 24v as a good engine if you didn't mind the weight, now however the cost of gearboxes, parts supply drying up and engine becoming more scarce make it a less sensible choice.
Personally i think the Zetec has had it's day also now the Duratec is getting more affordable, the Redblock from the Volvo is still good, but donors are disappearing so a few more years for that and it won't be the cheap engine it is currently.
Just my opinions obviously, but i find it hard to justify saying using a non original manufacturers engine ruins cars when people are happy to use aftermarket wheels, paint, interior parts etc etc.

Ford engine would ruin it Good thing I don't care about comments like that Mine goes well, is reliable and easier to find parts for compared to the 1256 that came out and that would be exactly the same with regard to the 2300-to-XE conversion as well as the Zetec Key note here is......don't knock it till ya tried it

i'm just about to whip my slant 4 out ....theres loads of engines that SHOULD go in depends how far you want to take it maybe a run of the mill zetec or vaux equivalent or k series light as anything else depends on the power you want

Do it I had a 2.3 slant and it was rubbish they all leak a lot of oil they don't rev and there arent enough gears that's why I ripped it out and put a redtop in with a Carlton gearbox and home made sump (I brought a new cavalier steel one and chopped it up)

decision made , leaving the 2300 in the firenza , going to spend the money on the car elsewhere, determined to get it on the road this year so concentrating on the bits that really need doing. thanks for the comments guys . been a mixed lot of opinions.
