wikipedia sums it all up nicely actually ... "Some are real narrow in their understanding while others are true to the "spirit" of the activity." yeah probably right,.. I guess if your there at the start it does narrow your view some what... I mean I'd never consider a kit car a volksrod,.. but others might... Equally I'd never consider a rat look car a volksrod.. Also Keefy right back at you with the creative editing of Wikipedia entry : "As with "traditional" hot rodding the definition depends on who you ask." In Fact : "Volkswagen beetles. They are used as an alternative to traditional hot rods and are quickly growing in popularity. Classic Ford Model T's and Model A's are becoming more scarce and more valuable. It has reached the point that only people with money can afford to build and hot rod these types of cars. Because of this, according to some, hot rods have lost that sense of rebellion and have become stale. As an alternative, the Volkswagen community has turned to the volksrod. The volksrod starts out as a traditional Volkswagen beetle. They are cheap, easier to find, and easier to find parts for. The standard method of the conversion involves removing the front and rear fenders of the beetle, and then installing a classic Ford front axle to move the wheels forward and give the car a low, stretched look. After that it's finished off with a chopped top and a flat black paint job. There are other methods to accomplish this look. Another popular method to accomplish this look is to move the stock Volkswagen axle beam forward or reverse the trailing/torsion arms and re-work the steering linkages." Doesn't seem to mention any kit cars to me,... maybe my dyslexia isn't helping,.. I'll re-read it a few times ..... ....... no... no kits mentioned.

heres stink bug which I think someone referred to earlier www.vwtrendsweb.com/features/0405vwt_1964_volkswagen_bug_hot_rod/thinking back to the start of the modern trend of voksrods, surely that was started in ... 94/95ish with that red 'volksrod'. Was it called the rodfather? I know Paul Knights old bug took that name, so now I'm doubting if this is correct ... I have the volksworld feature in the loft, might have to scan it later ...

That took on the "hot rod" influences,.. flames, red steels, pinstriping etc.... but the thrown forward forks, chopped roof, fenderless look of Fred Hildagos car seems to be the real jump off point for modern volksrodding.

From the old days in 60's california through to modern day traditional cal look, removal of side trim is purely optional. Lowered front, stock height rear and big motors are the main nececities (sp)

oh, and on the whole volksrod thing, yes, the kit cars are volksrods, but only because thats what the kit manufacturers called them. volksrods these days are beetle based cars. The kits are not 'volksrods' as in they are not part of the volksrod scene, although they are called volksrods. The confusion comes from a modern scene and an old kit car sharing the same name. If you want to talk and share pics of volksrods, you need to specify old kit cars or modern rodded beetles, they are two completely different things with the same name. personaly, even with my deep ingrained long term love of volkswagens, i cant stand them bloody volksrod kits!

Most pointless arguement discusion evar! This is hurting my head. If its a ford, or ford (etc) style bodied hotrod with VW running gear can it be a Volksrod, If its a beetle cut down in the style of a hotrod can it also be a Volksrod please. But if we have to keep going don't forget the sub-pigeon hole genre style type thing of mogwagonrod.

F**K ME! what a hornets nest I started! I'm going to say that 95% of whats been posted are volksrods. chopped/channeled beetles are volkswagen hotrods (ie. volklsrods) as much as beetle motivated traditional 'rod bodies. there all styled and themed to the ideals of hot rod culture, encompassing them in to the rod scene, making them volkswagen hot rods. I wonder whether this has only got this heated because its a vw based argument. if it was "hillmarods" or "toyorods" (or any other daft made up name I can produce ) I doubt people would get so hot under the collar about branding, labelling and pidgeon holing. can't we just catogorise stuff as "hot" or "not" according to individual opinion. in the beginning I didn't ask whether its was a volksrod or hotrod. I asked if it was cool or not. and to repeat, can't we just catogorise stuff as "hot" or "not" according to individual opinion.so get off your high horses

It only got contraversial because there is already a scene, with scene rules. Whether thats a good or bad thing, who knows/cares, but the fact remains that volkrods are a scene, and has its own rules. Volksrod kit cars don't fit those rules. All people were doing is clarifying the situation. The VW scene is WAY too full of 'rules'!!!
