my mrs car died this weekend and as she needs a car for work for Tuesday we have been shopping for a new car.we found one that ticks all the boxes[cheap,mot,taxed and local] but the downside is the previous owner was a smoker and we are not.so the car smells of smoke[its not to bad] but I hate the smell so how can we get rid of the smell?
theres no signs of heavey staining
we have cleaned it with some soap and water but what else can we use? don't just want to fill it with air freshners as that's just hideing the smell and not getting rid of it
should also add the seats are half leather

A decent car valeter should be able to sort you out. I think what you need is called an Ozone Generator. You can hire them but a decent valeter should have such a machine themselves.

Paul H thanks sounds good but as I like doing things myself so was hopeing there was a diy solution but maybe there isn't and its time to get help. |

You can get something called a deoderiser bomb, you put the heater on full blast on recirculate, let it of in the car and let it run for a while. I have used them before to good effect. Valet suppliers sell them. Warning DON'T stay in the car with it.

Cheap and nasty pressure wash/ steam clean the headlining use TFR on everything then use a VAX (other hoovers are available;)) to suck it dry with.
Gets most odours out.
Failling that start on the cherry rollies

Last one I had which was baccy smelt
was whopped by two cans of febreeze
just empty the contents into the cabin
shut the doors
leave overnight
and in my case all was good

smell or sell?
I had a car recently that stank like an ashtray and had mould everywhere too. We took all the seats out, hoovered everything, then sprayed them all and the carpets, and everything else with a whole trigger bottle of antibacterial spray from the motor factors. worked pretty well. looked mint inside and smell almost gone next day. sold the car in the evening and the buyer didnt mention any funny smells. result.

Little bit of fresh charcoal left in there for a day or two. Was recommended to me to get smell out of a weed dealers car after I got it.
