Hey you loverly lot,
I'm toying with the idea of upgrading the carb on my MkII Consul to a 4-stage jobby and a decent air intake to hopefully push that little bit more out the meagre straight-4 I'm rolling
any suggestions what might be compatible? I know Holleys are good (but pricey) and not sure which would be a subtible candidate.
Any help? i wanna get one before i go to the speedshop so theres less ar*eing around

Pretty much any 4 barrel carb is going to be too big for a 1703cc 4 pot.
The smallest of these carbs are designed to feed engines in the 4.5 litre range really.
The bestest carb for just about every application is a Weber 38DGAV / DGAS. They jusy work on everything from a 1600x/flow up to a Rover 3500.

Nah I'm trying to go for a few options prior to next years engine swap (if i have the money)
just that someone of vast knowledge said you can get and fit some 4-stage carbs to my engine and tweak it to get a hurrendous amount of extra performance. He knows his stuff and owns several hotrods so i beleive him
maybe he was on a different wavelength

4 Stage? Do you mean stage 4 by any chance? Something like twin Webers may be infinitely more suitable? 4 barrels are really only for 6 or 8 pots, in V configuration usually...

that may just well have been what he meant....to be honest I'm reasonably new to car engines so i am learning ( as fast as possible )
whats the difference then between 4-barrel and 'stage 4' ?

stage 4 can mean what ever you like it to mean.
People used to sell tuning kits in stage packages. Stage one got you a few extra BHP, stage 2 was more parts, more power, etc. and so it went on. In fact some of the manufacturers even used to offer "stage tuning" as factory options on some new cars (for example Buick GS455 could be had regular, stage 1 and stage 2)
A 4 barrel carb has 4 venturis where the fuel is atomised in air. Its basically like having 4 carburettors in one case. They are usually used on American V8s from the 50s through 1980s.

Yeh i understand the concept of carbs.
Which would be the best option for the most horsepower as far as carbs go?

Aquaplane did a tripple SU set up for the 6 pot Zeph/Zody so recreate something similar on a welded tube intake with a pair of SUs or Stomberg CD175s. Ol' SKool.
Or go whackedout crazy modern high tech and fab up some bike carbs or even throttle bodies...
Theres nothing available off the shelf for those motors so it will need to be made up what ever you use.
Or drop a Pinto in it, thats what everybody else seems to do

bike carbs!?!? that would be mental.
as for the pinto...they generally are only 2000cc and if I'm gonna engine swap i might as well wait and put a 3.5 Rover V8......let it effin' roar!
just wanted something for the time being

as theres nothing really available which is an easy fit for your engine (to my knowledge) then anything you do to it will be a fair sized job and a voyage of discovery. I have seen tuned Consul engines in rods before, and they loiok cool and proper period, but I bet a lot of work went into them. You could be lucky and find someone selling some stuff off (check NSRA, Swapmeet, eBay, etc.)
Fabbing up a set of manifolds is probably a fair bit more work than fitting a Pinto...

Perhaps you could try the 4 barrel Nikki off the 12a 1146cc wankel unit?
