My dad's decided not to put his Golf Mk2 on the road again for another year. I keep telling him it might be of interest to someone but he wants to break it for a few bits he wants and scrap the rest.
So how much is an A reg Golf Mk2 with an 1100cc petrol engine and a 2 door shell worth? Tatty but serviceable, even has a week or two's MOT left.
Go on - help me convince him it's too good to scrap!

£50.
Or put on VW forum with *Rare! Pov-spec! Rat-look! Hood-ride!* with a £500 tag.
With the price of scrap being so high*, weighing it in would look mighty tempting.
*As I know to my cost. Here's a hint - don't remove all the radiators from your house and leave them in your front garden awaiting re-fitting!!!! I have no radiators to re-fit now.

Not worth a mountain to be honest, you can still get early 16v's in the sub 1k bracket.

It depends what you call tatty, also depends what you call serviceable, (ie anything need doing, clutch, driveshafts etc?) what sort of mileage its clocked up and whether it feels like a tired old rubbing rag or solid old motor.

I'm with pog, put it on VZi for £500+, be prepared to email the pics out to 10000 interested parties who just need to sell something else first, then send it for scrap anyway.
Having said that, A-reg Mk1's are quite a rarity now are they not?

A-reg Mk2's are indeed pretty rare, I'd definitely sell it complete on ebay or a VW forum with 'rare rare early Mk2 basic spec' etc as mentioned about, should get a few hundred quid for it.

Stivck it on ebay with a 10 p start and no reserve. It might make £50-100 and at least it might live on. It would weigh in for about £60 as scrap, but then it's gone forever. Forums aren't good places to sell stuff IMO - you just get all the 'I need to sell my car first' idiots who don't actually have £50 plus as said earlier they all want detailed pics of the ashtray in triplicate. Losers!

How likely is it to get another years ticket? With an MoT, and choice advertising, I'd say you'd cover the cost of the test and pocket up to £100, more than you'd get scrap.
If it's full of rot and crud, then break it.

So it seems I'm alone in seeing potential I just think it's too good to go even if it is a rather uninspiring spec, afaik it's pretty MOT-worthy, just surplus to requirements. Never mind eh! Just remember in 10 years time when Mk2 Golfs are the new split screen busses and command a scene tax in excess of the GDP of a small third world country that RR got it so wrong on this one! I'll stick some baking tins under the rear wheels and sell it as "T3h l33t Dr1ft0rzz W4gon" then.

Anything with a years MOT is worth £400 standing on its head these days. Hmm, not sure about that. I had a really tidy 97 R plate 2.0GLS Vectra a few weeks ago with 10 months MOT which the owner couldn't sell. I paid £150, robbed the Sony CD player and 10 disc changer and advertised it - I just got all the penniless council meatheads (whass ya lowest price mate) so I weighed it in as scrap, £80!

My Driver with a long MoT which was visually a bit tatty because the clearcoat on the paint had gone but other wise very sound and had all new suspension sold for about £180.
