Helloo,
I'm hoping to get a little help with my MK2 Polo 1043cc. It's got the 5 speed manual box
Over the past month or two, I've been feeling a lot of vibration and movement through the front wheels. At first I though some bushes might be worn and need replacing. However, yesterday I noticed that it was making a horrible grinding noise, increasing with road speed. It sounded like a wheel bearing had died, but I have replaced both front bearings relatively recently. Also, I could feel the vibrations through the pedals.
After going go karting this morning (feckin awesome) I decided to get it on the drive and see whats what. I've got it up on axle stands with no wheels on the front. After turning the engine on and engaging 3rd gear, the noise returned. The noise disappears when you stop the drivers side road wheel, and increases when you stop the passenger side wheel.
My almost educated guess, would be that a bearing of some sort has died, most likely in the gearbox or diff. It makes sense, as about 6 months ago, I had problems with the gearbox overheating, and popping out of gear, due to not having enough fluid in. After changing the fluid, it didn't overheat, but it did whine slightly more than it used to. Maybe the lack of fluid has just worn it out completely?
I'm going away in 2 weeks, and could do with fixing this before the long drive, so I would be grateful for any advise or personal experience.
Thanks in advance!
