Hi all The only thing I wasn't sure on with the Golf I've brought is the engine. It is a standard 1.3 with a slight problem. It has had a new head gasket, the head skimmed, new cambelt, tensioner, plugs, etc... but it is still a bit smokey. It has never overheated and has been well looked after. The only thing I can think of is that the head is cracked. Does anyone else have any ideas what could be up? Enjoy some lovely Golf's for your troubles ;D

It's very possible there's still some coolant left in the exhaust from when the gasket blew if that was recent. Was it replaced long ago?

Smoke or steam?
I should think it's most likely to be the valve stem seals, rather than anythign serious...
How many miles has it done?

I was having a good sniff round for antifreeze but theres no smell at all. Runs fantastic & ticks over spot on. Thats why I'm a little confused. I don't pick up the car till Tue/Wed due to I need my insurance documents so I can get tax. Will whip a plug out and have a lookski then

Its been started, but due to the tax running out in Jan it hasn't been on the road, just started up on the driveway.

I really hope that bodywork was like that when they got to it! If so.. coool, if not... what a waste.

P.S. I would stick with it. The 1043 in my Polo smokes a fair bit, but it has been sat and only run on the driveway for a while.

I'd expect valve stem seals to make it smoke on start up (more when reved) then clear after 5-10 mins, however its not been run properly so who can say.
If even when driven regularly it always smokes a bit when reved i'd suspect either a cracked/warped head, leaking head gasket (damaged?) or rings/bore wear.
I suspect its just because its sitting and oil is seeping past the stem seals. A good run will reveal more.
Whatever the problem its not going to be a big deal. The engines are easy to rebuild and cheap to replace.
You can buy a good sixteen for £30 ;D

Hmm... I don't think it is.
I forgot to mention, it still has the 'mayo' looking stuff on the oil cap.

Hmm... I don't think it is. I forgot to mention, it still has the 'mayo' looking stuff on the oil cap. Again, if the car's not been used much over the last few weeks/months, except the odd short run, a bit of 'cap jizz' is 'normal' at this time of year As soon as the car has had a good run and got right up to temp, is should clear... If it hasnt, check your coolant to see whether: a) it's got oil in it (you'll see the rainbow effect water) b) the level isn't changing (up or down) That's what I'd do anyway....
