???I'm just wondering if we could answer the old old question. "whats the best car chase film ever".
My vote must go to the original Gone in 60 seconds, the original 1974 version.
Mustang Mach1 being thrashed and some top Retro haircuts.

Not seen the original gone in 60 secs, but I do love the chases in Ronin
edit: and for what it's worth, I was really, really disapointed with the more recent version of gone in 60 secs and cannonball run is more a comedy than car chase movie...

Sammy : "We've got a secret weapon. God is our co-pilot!"
Dean : "God is our co-pilot? Remember our car? Two seats?"
Sammy : "Two seats?"
Dean : "Where's he gonna sit? Where?"

i gotta say Ronin too. IMHO you can identify with it better cos the cars are easily reconisable.

The original "Gone in Sixty Seconds" wins hands down because the entire film is built around a car chase. It's not just some brief action sequence ireelevant to the plot plus it's done as a true car chase should be... without too much obvious choreography and no computer effects etc.
Ronin scores well as a chase sequence though. The Bourne Identity's chase with the Mini, although short is a good 'um. Not seen the sequal yet but from what I've seen the one in that looks even better.
What about the following films ?...
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (classic!) Duel Eat My Dust (corny!) Midnite Spares Grand Theft Auto (check out the stunt using the Datsun 510 wagon!) Goodbye Pork Pie (one for Mini fans) Running on Empty The Gumball Rally Hooper The Junkman (also by H.B. Halicki of Gone in 60 secs)
There's dozens more of varying quality on my wanted list ;D

Goodbye Pork Pie...poor lil yellow mini Hahah thats excellent!!!! "We're taking this curse word to Invercargill!" Anyway though... the 1969 Italian Job works for me, I cannot ever get enough of watching that film, it's just so brilliant!!! Plus it has lots of Alfa Guilia Super's in it and heaps of other cool Italian cars!!!! Love "The Self Preservation Society" song even though it's a tad overused as well!!!

Forgot Gumball. Haven't found it on video yet. A lot of the ones listed aren't retro car chase. The movies are retro the cars were current. Gumball at least tried to include a variety of, at the time, of classics motors. oh oh hey Smokey and the Bandit (but only the first)

The (original) Italian Job has to be the best.
I have to add two of Luc Besson's films : "Taxi", starring Sami Naceri and a Peugeot 406 touring car, and the "Transporter", starring Jason Statham and a BMW 735i E38.

Theres heaps of really good ones. I wonder where my user name came from I actually prefer the new Vanishing Point to the original, the car chase scenes are similar but the story line is just more sensible. Overall though I think the best car move would have to be the original italian job. The original gone in 60 seconds is right up there but the mustang is so ugly compared to the remake, plus its pretty cheesy and unrealistic so that drops it down a place or two.

Out of the list I'd probably go for the Italian Job. Absolute top film IMO.
Gotta give credit to the French though, when it comes to car chase movies they've certainly got a handle on it in recent years. Ronin, Taxi and Taxi 2 all have some great scenes in!

Watched Ronin again the other day... classic car chase ;D Smokey and the Bandit (1) is classic, as is Cannonball Run (got that on DVD ) Gone in 60 Seconds (Nic Cage Remake) is pretty cool (have yet to see original) Think we need an All of the Above option - cos I can't decide! ha ha!
