Hello, been a while since ive done a car up, last one was an escort mk2 4 door, was going to use it for rallying, but ended up selling to buy a house...... it started like this.... [/img] i51.photobucket.com/albums/f369/jamesbow/001-1.jpg and finished like this.... [/img] i51.photobucket.com/albums/f369/jamesbow/006-3.jpganyway........ i have a viva now and looks to be a good base with less rust than the escort, 4 link standard, upright rear shocks, low petrol tank, fire wall, big rear tubs, and independant suspension. so here is my sad looking HC, i51.photobucket.com/albums/f369/jamesbow/viva.jpghope these pictures upload :S Plan for this is weld it, paint it, new interior as there was a large mouse family living init (all dead now) lower and better engine and running gear. want to do this as cheap as possable so any advice/input is appreciated

8v would be good.. axle wise a simple upgrade is a magnum axle.. but if you need more strength a scimitar axle is correct length and a jag powerlock diff will fit easy strone as too and cheap. however you will either have to weld or bolt on "ears" so the top arms fit or 4 link and panhard rod it.. si

Nice, yet another Viva on here! Don't bother with the Manta CIH engine, it's a right old boat anchor and only gives 110 bhp with injection and 10 less in carb form. I agree with owen and B-8-D, the Carlton 8V engine is the one to go for if you're gonna stick with a Vauxhall unit. Good luck with it mate, keep us posted.

if you need any spares let me know. also for engine. you can use a 2.3 block and modify the lotus 907 TC head. with mods to block and head you can see over 200 bhp. it'll be expensive to build at around 1000 to get the engine sorted but it'll look period racer then.

thanks for the info, i supose the 2.3 is rare now? especialy the lotus head. I'm looking for a simple fast road car i can enjoy the lanes in, and go to a few shows. are there many carlton engines about these days? use the carlton box too? ive found a jensen healey axle, can i put a slipp in that?

I had a 2.3 and hated it so now I've got a redtop and Carlton box but you don't have to stick with vauxhall engines,if you were a ford man then that could be a good idea or something a bit different like Volvo 940 turbo lump

jensen healey axle is 2.3 viva axle. you can put a lsd in it. but they are poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo.

If your not bothered about keeping it vaux, look into a zetec on a dohc sierra box, you can get a manifold to run a dgv 2.0 pinto carb which is jeted about right or dcoes. If you get a mondeo for the engine a mk1 you can use the mondeo ecu and just make a little box to hold the key and key reader and ignition barrel. I have all the info on what wires you need to run the ecu just for the spark so you just chop the loom off and wire the ones you need, it also removes rev limiter and you can easy make 150bhp

Depends what you want and how much you want to spend. The OHC Vivas were known to be fairly front heavy, the big lump doesn't do the handling any favours. The OHVs can be made to be quite nimble very easily.
This was my thought process when choosing a new engine, rather than the tried and tested route of the redtop, I didn't want to sacrifice my light front end. But, redtop is a relatively cheap conversion, has been done many times before so the knowledge is about, to me though it's not the most suitable. For a bit of a challenge, if I ever get around to it, I'm sticking in a 2.0 Duratec on a type 9 'box. Advantages are the Duratec weighs roughly 90kg as it's an ally engine, they're a very good well balanced engine apparently capable of near 200bhp with only breathing mods, and more power is doable if you want it, the type 9 can be modified to fit the gearbox tunnel without cutting it, they came in mk2 Mondeos which you can get dirt cheap these days. The disadvantages are the engine management is a massive pain and you'd need to spend quite a bit on a standalone management to run it, and there don't seem to be that many in Escorts, let alone any in Vivas, so it's slightly unknown ground. Second choice for me would be VVC K-Series but going over 200bhp on those isn't so cheap and easy.

You can run a mk1 mondeo modded loom on the duratec just need coil and crank plug, Ive never got into modding the loom because they have a lot more wires in the loom than the mk1. also you can run the fiesta edis box or the silver box out the cvh.

thanks for the input, the ohc is the vauxhall 1.8 and above sized engine I'm guessing? wouldnt mind going that route, not too botherd about sticking with vauxhall, only thing about FWD engines is i will need new sump and dizzy, or so ive been told. quite like the volvo idea, know of a few old volvos too. and ive heard the axle is a good upgrade for the viva..... if it fits. anyone used an MX5 engine and box? I'm no good at all with electrics, my first attempt set my car on fire (luckily had an extinguisher) and other attempts have seen my lads toy 4x4 blow up..... so, easy convesions is probably safest for me
