Description
For sale today is my left-hand drive 1985 Pontiac Fiero 2M4 SE. It was imported to the UK in 1990 and has had two previous owners. The Fiero has a current MOT (with no advisories) until August. It's also HPI clear.
The Pontiac's in very good condition overall and benefits from an incredibly comprehensive service record, which includes a thoroughly overhauled engine at 124,062 miles. More recently it's had a new clutch, new tyres and refurbished alloys. It has, fortunately, never wanted for anything.
Included with the sale is a full Pontiac parts and illustration catalogue, all its previous MOT certificates, three sets of keys, its original jack, various receipts and bills, the owner's handwritten and detailed service notes, a Haynes manual, the original Pontiac service manual and various other documentation. It's registered in my name; I'm selling it as it's no longer being used.
Despite its relatively low power output, the Fiero feels quite lively due to the 2.5's substantial torque. It's a beautifully smooth engine, willing and eager, and the clutch and gearbox (which is remarkably precise) operate well.
The Pontiac starts quickly and easily, cold or hot, and uses negligible oil or coolant. I've found it more than efficient and it'll cruise happily and smoothly at fast motorway speeds. The brakes pull it up squarely and offer plenty of stopping power, while the unassisted steering is precise - it doesn't require too much effort at lower speeds either.
What's most remarkable about the Fiero is how refined and comfortable it is. The driving position is a bit odd, with the pedals offset to the right, but the seats are supportive and nicely bolstered, while the ride is controlled but firm enough to make the Fiero feel a little sporting.
Because it's not so quick as to endanger your license, you can have good fun in it at sensible speeds too. With its slick gearbox, eager (but low revving) engine and low-slung stance, it's an engaging and charming commuter car.
There are a few negative points:
1) The cruise control is inoperative.
2) The indicator stalk has a crack in it (although it still works perfectly).
3) The driver's door hinge has dropped. A new one is $30 and easily fitted.
4) The temperature gauge operates erratically but it is just a fault with the gauge, not the cooling system. The Fiero's cooling system is perfect and the secondary coolant warning light does not illuminate.
5) There is some minor wear and tear in line with the car's age - for example, there are some paint chips and the driver's door lock is sloppy.
6) There's a small hole in the LHS bolster on the driver's seat
None of these issues impede the way the car runs or drives, however, and all the other electronics work - including the 'shift up' reminder light. The air-con works, and there are no leaks into the cabin. The tape deck works and accepts an MP3 adaptor cassette (included) and the radio functions well.
Fieros are relatively rare in completely standard form, especially in such good condition and in SE trim with a manual gearbox. It's a smart, presentable car and one that's enjoyable to drive - even more so if you put on some eighties' electro. You could even use it as the base for a 308 kit car or similar, if you felt so inclined.
Getting parts isn't too problematic, it's easy to work on, cheap to insure and it's not costly to run. It doesn't mind being parked up either; the battery holds a good charge.
If you've any questions, please ask. Viewings and test drives are welcome.
Best regards,
Lewis
