Afternoon all Yes, It's another Volvo related thread... As the title says, I've been looking round and found that I can get a 940 Turbo for a few quid more than the Volvo in the other thread. See one with 250k on the clock. I know they can handle a lot, but is there anything I should definatly look for? Cheers!

Providing it not been thrash (which I doubt as it would not have lasted 250,000 miles anyway) it should be OK, although I am sure it would benifit from a rebuild/freshen up! Being a turbo make sure the oil has been changed atleast every 6,000 miles, I would personally be amazed if it was still the original turbocharger though. Have been temped by a 940 turbo several times myself, the engine is quite tunable and the standard turbo is fairly large and unstressed, so they can take a hike in boost without breaking into a sweat! Check out turbobricks.com/ great site dedicated to turbo'd volvos Is it a manual or auto?

I bought a 940. It had done over 200K and had the B20ET lump in 2.0 turbo and it was £550 from a Volvo dealer which might be a bit steep. Absolutely brilliant all round car, Volvo really know how to make em. They are worth having a go in just to try out the steering lock. The engines are really strong and despite the mileage mine only smoked if you gave it full boost at high speed, probably turbo oil seals or piston blow by. The power from the 2.0t is pretty good too. The bad point for me was the handling which is good but totally neutral, mine would understeer when pushed hard and finding one with an LSD isn't easy. I fitted an air filter and recirc valve block to mine which caused the turbo to chirp like a rally car - highly amusing I must dig out a vid. I also fitted a boost gauge and ruddy great big CB aerial and roof mounted CB.

The later 5-cyl sounds gorgeous, but was only in FWD flavour...

That would be an 850/v70 then.
These cars are big and heavy, so the powerful peformance can be blunted. Still very nice motors. Estates fetch fair money in good nick, saloons go begging. Typical excellent build from volvo!

I've alway loved these. But can some one tell me what the difference between a 740 turbo and a 940 turbo.... they look the same to me.

To be honest, they're not as heavy as you might think - 1400kg isn't that bad for a car of its size, my mates MG-ZR turbo diesel weighs over 1300kg!! Get a late one with a B230FT or B230FK, get much nicer spec, manual M90 gearbox is very strong anda much nicer shift, and the block has oil squirters and 13mm as opposed to 9mm rods... the LH2.4 injection system is good for tuneability, and a guy on turbobricks sells chips for them, which work very well. As for handling, Bilstein shocks all round and thicker anti roll bars = Go Kart like, you truly wouldn't believe a brick could handle so well. Anyway - pictars!! Technically a 740.. but still... OT.. but thought about the 960? Same kinda money, better spec, straight 6 and luxo barge comfort

I have a tidy 120k mile but poorly one available in Nottingham if you fancy a tinker - just match the £50 the scrapper has offered and it's yours... (there is a more detailed post in the For Sale section)

The 740 and 940 were built at the same time for a period and only had detail changes. The 940 took the front end of the 760 turbo/v6 and the saloons had a smoother, more rounded rear end compared to the earlier 700 series saloons. Apart from a change in external trim from chrome to plastic on certain models and a very slightly different dashboard and a change from sliding heater controls to dial ones, theres very little between them!
From what ive been told, 940 turbos are not as powerful as the 740 turbos as they use a smaller turbo changer. a 2.3 740 turbo produces 180 odd BHP where a 2.3 940 turbo only produces 135, but they are pretty quick all the same. The later 940 turbos have a stronger block (i think) and oil squirters in the con rods to that spray oil onto the underside of the pistons to cool them down. You can tune them up to 200+ pretty cheaply and easily too ive heard! I'm yet to tune mine though.

I picked this up last year... No MOT and requires a new screen, track rod end, brakes and a few other little bits but it's a manual 2.3 Turbo with overdrive. cost £0.00 When it's repaired and with a full ticket I'll put it in the for sale section Although I may band the wheels, dump it and bin the interior.... if I have the time
