Just finished a load of work on my mk2 GTI 8v (head gasket went between cylinders) I've had it back on the road 2 days and I noticed the battery light is on very very dimly. When the car is revved or accelerating, it goes off. I checked the wiring on the alternator and the blue wire was all corroded so cleaned it up with a new connector. The belt has been replaced. I replaced the battery as it did need changing but the light is till glowing very dimly.... I put a multimeter on the battery without the engine running and I'm getting 12+ volts. I switch the engine on and the lights, blower etc and I'm getting 11+ volts (it should be 14+)
I'm thinking it's the alternator but I've a LOAD of work and may have disturbed something? Also, how could I tell if it's just the voltage regulator rather than the whole alternator?

Check engine earth lead? Use a jump lead from engine block to neg terminal on battery to double check.

+1 on check the engine earth. You can also test this by measuring the voltage between the alternator casing and the negative battery terminal - You should get less than half a volt at the very worst (with all the lights on etc)
You should see 13.5+ on the battery without the lights on, and the engine running, the battery won't actually start charging at all until about 12.5.

I'll check the earth tomorrow and take it from there. If it turns out to be the problem, I'll put a new earth in.

Checked the earth by putting a jump lead from the neg to the block and measured with the engine running, lights on, blower on etc and it's still chucking out 11 volts. I had a look at the voltage regulator and it looked knackered so I changed it and guess what??? It's still 11 volts. New alternator unless I'm mistaken.

Brushes have gone . The diode pack limits the output voltage ..

Just for fun you can rip out the diode pack and use the engine to set the output voltage to 230v ac and run your welding gear or tv etc etc

Took it to D & R Starters in Cable Street, Wolverhampton. All sorted. A cable from the Alternator to the Starter had rotted off Really good blokes. Don't charge for diagnostics and they refurb starters, alternators etc. good service and don't charge a lot either.
