Got some 9in wide wheels coming and I need to stretch the tyre slightly to avoid any possible arch rubbage... As I've never intentionally stretched a tyre on a rim before, can anybody suggest a suitable width? I'm thinking 215, but is that too narrow, there has to be an element of decent performance to it all still... Here's a pic of the rim. Can you guess what it is yet? I just hope they fit okay...

I got 215's on my 8.5in rims, and the tyre guide booklet thing that the ATS dude had suggested that was the narrowest tyre for that width rim. Sooo.... an extra 1/2in stretch wouldn't be too bad I reckon, if you can find a fitter that would do it. Cool steels BTW!

Just wasn't sure whether to make the jump to 225s. I've got some on my 8in BMW rims, and they're just too fat for liking. Those steels will look a hell of lot cooler when cut, shut and three inches wider! Bring on a steaming hot plate of dish... ;D

For a Euro (low-profile) style stretch, you could probably find the answer by going here: forums.vwvortex.com/zerosearch and typing tire stretch in the search box as well as clicking the archived content button.

And some banded 17in steel action will hopefully be with me by the end of next week. Cheers for the link Rmad , just needed some examples to reference from so that's ideal. Obviously it also depends on brand of tyre too, as some are more square shouldered etc

Got some 9in wide wheels coming... I'm thinking 215, but is that too narrow... The '215' bit of the tyre name refers to the width of the tyre in mm at its widest point - i.e. the tyre is 215mm wide 9 inches is just under 230mm - so you will be stretching your tyre 15mm wider than the tread. Wheels & tyres have the most confusing standard designations of anything that is standardised over the world - the mixing of measuring in most mesmerising...
