A 'What car' thread on RR not Pistonheads, what is this madness... but yeah, id like to see what you guys come up with as I'm looking for something that isnt boring/common Criteria: -Must do 40/45+ MPG So idealy a diesel. -Going to be doing 300-350 Miles a week so needs to be reliable -Cheap/easy to work on -Max budget of 1.5K/2K For the car. Idealy want one for around the 1K Mark so i have money sat away for emergency's etc. -Power steering/few luxuries is a must, else id keep this bog standard 106 diesel, but i get annoyed driving a lot of mileage without creature comforts. Looking for something interesting, out of the ordinary, doesnt have to be retro but i would like it to be Chuck ideas at me chaps! Cheers

MPG in the region of 40-42 should be doable with ease. Or a Citroen AX diesel? They'r known do get stellar MPG figures!

405 is the same engine 406 is HDI. I had a 306 xtdt electric everything just no air com got 50mpg round town and 70mpg on the motorway at 56mph. Sold it at 190k with origional engine gear box only had 1 rad and 1 clutch über reliable

Well the economy may fall very slightly below what you're expecting, but how about my rare 1990 Audi 100 SE saloon? 2.0i five pot + five speed, PAS, EW, CL, ESR, 72K from new, LOADS of room inside - a very different and reliable blank canvas Oh, did I mention its for sale at £850..? Triumph Acclaim should satisfy the above. The lack of spares may become a pain for some spares though. Luxuries tend to vary though. How about a 106 but a later car with PAS and electric windows? These will harm the MPG though. A friend of mine in a basic 106 1.5D used to average over 50MPG generally with it going to 74MPG if in the slow lane. 306 DT is a good shout, but maybe not the most frugal. The engines IMO are refined for their time (they are more drivable than the contemporary Ford 1.8 TD and Isuzu 1.7s (the lag on those is horrific), but IMO they are not amazingly frugal. I used to get anywhere between 39-47MPG out of my 306 DT, with my friend averaging similar figures in his 406 1.9 TD. The HDIs do improve upon that figure though (around 50+MPG can be done with a little effort apparently. Phase II Renault Clio 1.5D? I am currently driving a Kangoo at work with that engine. Slow it may be but even with all of the creature comforts (PAS, AC, electric windows etc) 46MPG is easily doable around town . On a country run you will be well in the 50s. Bear in mind that a Kangoo weighs a little more than a Clio too. I know they are not retro but they do satisfy quite a bit of your criteria (tax should be cheap too . A 205 STDT would be a good shout, and great fun (I loved a dubiously reshelled DTurbo (read a GTi car rung with a DTurbo V5 and having the engine from that DTurbo) in terms of fun for your bucks), but they are now a little thin on the ground.

Yawn,
I'd go for an £800 LS400, that leaves £1200 for the extra 15mpg you'd like from a tractor engine
No?
What about something that doesnt run on neat fossils that does 40mpg, I imagine most things under 2.0 will pull off this feat, that Audi above sounds ideal

After doing 2000 miles a week in a car that did 23MPG around town, going to a car that did 40+ was a great feeling for me. OK the 23MPG was more fun, but my work car is exactly that, a work car, something others trash about despite me taking care of it. I'd rather have a thirsty car as my play car, not as something that will be degraded through many miles of daily abuse etc. .
