Afternoon folks- I have a potentially very stoopid q...
As I (allegedly) am the font of all motoring knowledge my friend has asked me how he turns the heater on in his '73 Beetle. Now, I would have throught this would be fairly simple but he says there is just a knob for the stereo and one for the wipers but no obvious way of turning the heater on.
Is there a heater at all and if so how do you control it?
I only briefly saw the car during summer so I have no idea. As I say it may be a very dumb question!!

It uses heat exchangers from the exhaust. It'll have two levers next to the handbrake. Pull them upwards, and his feet will roast, and he'll probably get poisoned as the heat exchangers will have rotted out!! The knobs on the dash are to direct air through the dash vents. Mike

check the cables. i'll bet they will either not exist or have broken, and therefore the heating wont work
like most dub owners, he'll learn to live with it as opposed to fix it ;D

As said there are 2 levers by the handbrake (or a rotary knob by the gearstick if it's pre '65ish) The right lever is for heat and the left lever opens the flaps to the rear footwells, or is it the other way around? Have a look at the heater outlets in the rear kickboards and try pulling either lever, you should see a flap move with one of them. The other lever will be connected to both heat exchangers which is part of the exhaust system. Real men have petrol heaters in their aircooled cars ;D

Real men have an ice scraper for the inside of the windscreen Although my beetle heater was jammed on... and the heat exchangers were new. Melted trainers on a long run!

J tubes are like the heat exchangers on the exhaust, except they don't exchange heat, they just flow the gases straight though. Like every other aircooled VW owner I've given up on heating, and still drive around with the window down and the quarterlights open all through the winter.

If all seems well, and all the pipes are in place, but you still don't get much heating, then its time to take the body off and replace the heater channels (sills to non vw guys)
