Wondered if anyone wants to save my trusty Polo from the crusher…
The car was first registered on 01-Apr 1997. I bought her on 14-June-2000 from Abridge Motors (VW main dealer, same one that originally supplied her). Was my daily driver until last July when it failed the MOT (rust mainly, see below). As I had a baby on the way I picked up a five door mk3 golf, and left the polo parked in front of my garage thinking I'd put her on RR the following week. 9 months and a baby later and I've finally go around to it.
MOT fail sheet dated 21-July-2012 reads:
Reasons for refusal:
01 Nearside registration plate lamp not working
02 Offside seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded
03 Offside body or Chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting it’s strength within 39cn of the body mountings
04 Nearside front tyre tread depth below requirements
05 Offside rear tyre tread depth below requirements
Advisory Items:
06 Front brake discs worn pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened
07 Front suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive
08 Front brake hoses slightly deteriorated
09 Offside rear wheel bearing has slight play
10 Oil leak
11 Corrosion on n/s side sill
12 Corrosion on n/s/r floor pan
13 Sump corroded
note: Regarding MOT point #10 (the oil leak advisory), the car never used any oil of note, and has been sat in the same place for nearly 9 months with not a drop of oil appearing underneath, so I really don’t think it is anything too noteworthy
Good points
Bad points
She’s never let me down and I think with the rust plated over would easily give a good few years more service, but please don’t expect a minter. As much as I’d like to see her back on the road, I won’t be accepting any silly offers. If I’ve had no serious interest by Monday I’ll be removing a couple of things I want and getting her scrapped.
Finally I should say that the V5c is present, but is still registered to my parents address (if you doubt I am who I say I am, I can show you my passport).

Good points
- Only two owners from new, including me for the last 12+ years.
- Never once let me down. The only time she ever failed to start on a cold winters morning after an extended work trip, and her six year old battery finally gave up. Replaced battery and started first time. Before I took her off the road, she was my daily driver commuting on the motorway to/from work every day just fine (33 mile round trip). Was always fine on big journeys – last of which I can remember was round trip to Newcastle (500 miles) in Feb 2012.
- started her today for the first time in some months, and she started on first go. A bit tappet to start with, but then was fine. Drove her up and down the driveway a little bit, and all seems fine. Idled her for 30 mins while I took the photos, and it got up to temperature and remained there, so all seems as well as I can test (bearing in mind cannot take her on the road due to no mot/tax).
- 2 x original keys that work with the factory fit immobiliser
- Lots of history. During my ownership, I’ve got receipts for yearly service from VW main dealers until 2005. Then from 2006 to 2008 have receipts for services at local independents. For the most recent few years she was just serviced by me, but still have the MOT certs. Service book is not here right now (99% sure is at my parents), but could post on if needed – though I warn I never got the book stamped, previous owner did, but I just stuck it on a shelf and collected the receipts instead.
- New battery, plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm in Dec 2011
- Oil change just before it’s last MOT (June 2012)
- Nearly full tank of BP petrol (that’s the last time I ever fill a car up before it’s MOT!!)
- Starts OK, all mechanicals and electrics were working fine when taken off the road, and believed to still be working fine.
- Has original spare wheel, jack etc.
- Considering the small size has surprisingly good load capacity with the rear seats folded flat, she did great on a couple of house moves and numerous trips to the tip.
- Will throw in my Haynes manual too.
Bad points
- MOT failures as listed above.
- Stereo removed.
- Usual stonechips in bonnet (car has spent most of my ownership cruising up and down the M3).
- Couple of small holes in the upholstery - one in the carpet, and one in the back seat
- One of the clips that holds the glovebox shut is broken, but still works.
- diagram on top of gearstick that shows placement of gears has fallen off.
- Paintwork is fading to pink, seems common on this colour. Drivers door is still a brighter red, I can only assume the car had a minor knock before my ownership and the door was resprayed. I was unaware when I bought the car and has only become evident in the last couple of years as the other paintwork has faded. I’ve never tried t-cutting her, so maybe would come up alright with a bit of effort.
- Lacquer peel, mostly on driver’s door.
- A few scuffs on the paintwork, most notably one on the front bumper and a small dent on the rear bumper.
- Cam belt change is due.
- Couple of small superficial cracks in the dash – I guess as a result of 15 years of summer/winter temperature extremes taking their toll.
- Couple of marks on the headlining due to carrying my mountain bike in the back.
- Been standing for 9 months so needs a good wash and scrub, inside and out.
- Small chip in the windscreen, but this has been professionally filled (receipt should be in the pile of documents) and is not in an area to cause MOT failure.
