I'm taking my old Chevy Van shell to be scrapped tomorrow.
I believe things have changed since I last got scrapped a car, and they no longer give you cash but pay into your bank account, which is no problem. Seeing as I forgot to call them, can anyone tell me what documentation is required? I've got the logbook, my license and a recent bank statement at the ready, am I likely to need 'owt else?
The yard is Wards in Ilkeston if it makes any difference and anyone has any local knowledge!
Cheers, Martin

I'm in Manchester, I towed my 1996 celica to scrap yard. They weighted the car, I then parked it up in a section for cars. Handed the keys to the guy who was dealing with cars. Went over to the main reception, handed the V5 and my driving licence. They took the relevant paper part of V5 and photo copied my licence. He gave a receipt with the weight of the car, I went to second window and they paid me out £168. I gave my debit card so he could put money on and that was it. Money arrived 3 days later. Simples!

I scrapped a Peugeot last weekend. They paid out in cash! As long as you have photo ID and the logbook they do still pay in cash!

They shouldn't pay out in cash unless you're a registered scrap metal trader.

^apparently that's only for scrapping/weighing in seperates like brass, copper, catalytic converters, ally etc....^
When it comes to cars, they can supposedly still just give you cash. Well, that's what I was told yesterday which I was quite surprised about, but came from someone who breaks cars fairly regularly (but isn't a scrap metal trader)

I'm guessing with cars they have the v5 paper trail as evidence to where the cash has gone so negates the requirement to pay into a bank account?

Thanks for the replys chaps, I'll just take my docs with me and see what happens. Probably best if they do pay it into my bank account, if they give me cash in hand, I'll only spend it! lol

I may have asked this question in the past on another forum or maybe even on here (it rings a bell but I can't find it so apologies if I asked it before) but I'm planning to get a car to grab the engine and electricals then sell off anything worthwhile on Ebay then cut the shell up with cutting discs in an angle grinder so the steel is nice and compact.
At this point should I weigh in the metal with V5 to be scrapped to somewhere that will give me a certificate or just take it to whichever metal place gives the best price as metal? If the latter, can I just send off the V5 saying 'scrapped'. Will some department want to know about disposal of fluids and detonation of airbags?

Take it to where ever will give you the best price, I wouldn't go to the trouble of cutting it up - it'll take too long and cost too much, don't forget to rip out the loom you can weigh them seperately - or use it for lengths of wire, same with anything alloy, if you are going on weight some people fill the tank with water to make them heavier on the bridge....Just send the V5 to DVLA saying its been scrapped or give the V5 to the breakers - you should then get a COD...

Yeah I tend to hold on to looms and relays and things that take up no space but are expensive to buy. Thanks Dodgerover Back many years ago the companies that picked up shells and gave £50 in their advert always had a problem with my shell and needed cash to take it away as they were doing me a favour. If I had a pile of scrap that I delivered myself I thought it might get a much better price.

As an update to this thread, all they wanted was the V5 from me and my bank card to credit the money onto. Price given was £145 a ton on Saturday. Most of the loom, the cat, wheels (and anything else saleable such as seats, side glass, engine/box, ecu, dash etc.) were removed, still weighed in at a hefty 1150KG!!
And as an aside, many thanks to Gem and John for turning up with their transporter and giving me a hand removing wheels and stuff!
