Did I read theres only 6 of these left on the road? I saw one a few days ago and ment to mention it. Sadly too slow with my phone to get a pic. It was a silver colour about a G reg I think and driven by a little old lady. Looked mint.
Those rarities are still out there

Surely there are more than 6? If not there 's a champagne gold G plate that lives around the corner from me. Where are the other 4?

I think the one that there are only 6 of, is maybe the koop version of the earlier (up to D/E plate?) shape which is completely different yet which somehow looks very similar until you look very closely. Theres certainly plenmty of G-reg shape ones about still. A cool car nonetheless.

I fear I may have misled you slightly Alistair. There 16 of these left: That's the 2.0 GLX (carb) version, the GC shape. There are a few more 2.0 EGi's of the same shape, though that number is falling from 50 downwards rapidly. There's a substantial number of the GD Coupes, which I think is the shape people are talking about mainly.

This thread reminded me of one a took a while ago - 2003 in fact: It's bad news for this one though I fear: The vehicle details for B494 MLT are:
Date of Liability 01 10 2004 Date of First Registration 18 09 1984 Year of Manufacture 1984 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1998CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour SILVER

The later ones look a bit like Skylines to me. Think you could get the later ones with 4WS. That one of kingmazs is stunning. Back half has got shades of MK5 cortina 2 - door.
Shame about the one below, reminds me of a Gold 626 coupe, also B-regd, that was dumped on Armley Road in Leeds in `03, the tax disc ran out in `99 and it had more rot than metal, it had obviously been dragged out of whatever marsh it had been standing in for 4 years in order to be dumped by the roadside . Odd. Didnt realise there were so few left at the time.
Is it the 626 GC 2.0 GLX coupe that there are 16 left of or the 626 GC Coupe full stop?

What the hell's on the wheels of MLT above?
Thanks Vicsmith for the kind words. Just to clear up the matter... he said hopefully.
There are 16 of 626 GC 2.0 GLX Coupes left, this is the carb version of this shape, which were made between 1983-5, from a few hundred originally sold. It appears that some of these are currently off road, so it's likely that less than 10 are running.
In total there were around 180 Coupes, Hatches and Saloons of these in the UK at Autumn 2006. 45 of these are automatics, curiously. They are split fairly evenly between 1600 LXs and the 2000 GLXs.
The same shape 626 GC 2.0 EGi Coupes are less than 50 in number and dropping rapidly.
This is somewhat confusing as these include the 1987/8 (E) interim version with the GD interior in the GC body. It seems to be this particular variant that's dropping like flies at the moment. They occasionally turn up on eBay for £75 in dreadful condition.
Of the proper GC EGi Coupes (1985-7) it is thought that a similar number again (15-25) are still with us and dropping at a slower rate.
The Coupe has a terrible rusting problem in key areas which kills them, the EGi also has the mind-boggling airflow monitoring system, which is making their running unviable after a certain age, so in five years or so, expect there be around 5-10 each of the GLX and EGi's left.
The GD EGi Coupe (more rounded shape) is more common and I'd imagine that there could be as many as 250 of these left. These have 140bhp and wild handling, which has accounted for a lot of them.
There are still (unbelievably) a small number of Montrose Coupes still around. An 81W turned up on eBay in reasonable condition last year and went for £600 or so. A pristine 79V example was on sale at a Yorkshire specialist in 2005 at £2995, I don't know if it was ever sold.
Hope that helps.

Ahh! This pic belongs in here and not the 929 thread ;D One of the rival teams on last years Czech Wrecks rally. It went well I seemed to remember, but we still managed to overtake it in our Volvo 240 up the Stelvio Pass ;D I *think* they brought it back to the UK afterwards, not 100% sure - it could have been scrapped in Austria (a few cars were when the Czech border guards wouldn't let them through) or left in Prague though!

Well I thought they'd made the GD Coupe a bit lighter than the GC. It's obviously still over a ton though, if 240 can skint it uphill! There is a similar story (from the Oxford Mail I believe) where a chap entered a similar thing with a £100 626 saloon of this shape and has kept it instead of the £12k motor has was running. I'll try and find it out.

Nice to see an old Mazda making the papers and getting the breed some of the recognition they deserve.
Bit worrying about the number of GC coupes left, a lot of people will still be running them because they`ve kept passing MOTs and not breaking down, without a thought to their rarity or how unbelievably stylish they are when kept tidy. These cars are only really a slipping clutch away from the scrapyard. I suppose thats what happens when you get a car that is just very good at everything but doesnt have any quirks, remarkable features or notoriety to make it stick in peoples minds.
I could never even be bothered trying to explain to anyone just how good 323s and 626s are, it doesnt mean anything till you`ve done 20,000 enjoyable, trouble free miles in a 15 year old example that would still put a lot of modern cars to shame in terms of how it looks and feels to drive.

Vicsmith, hopefully that’s what the eventual new random J-car site will seek to address! Maybe it’ll just be someone randomly searching for parts or to find a home for a car they’ve got for sale, but seeing people interested in them will hopefully encourage them not just to scrap it.

In that case I would be very interested to hear of this site`s progress, if a tough `80s motor like the 626 GC is on the exctinction list then some of the `70s stuff must be virtually gone, we must be down to some seriously low numbers for some models so if the site can save one example it could be preventing the model from disappearing completely.
If there is any contribution I could make at any stage then let me know, I am not a computer person, I havent got the first clue about making websites, photoshopping or anything really, but over the last 2 years I have saved 5 323s, a Justy and an `87 Colt from a certain trip to the crusher, so you never know I could prove useful in some way.

Wise words indeed, sir. When my wife's 106 fell to bits yesterday, I had no hestitation in lending her my Ibiza TDi for the day and me taking King Maz. So ok, it's February 23rd and it hasn't run for about three weeks so there was some complaining and spluttering, but once it was happy it was away. My journey to work is 35 miles each way and I was quite happy to let the 23yo 'banger' cause bemusement (amongst those who even noticed) as it skint past their £20k babies.
