Has the shortened word for Japanese been filtered? Just wondered about peoples views of the biggest Japanese car show in Europe being called Shortened Japanese word fest and the Hampshire shortened Japanese word car club I'm a member of. Then there is shortened Japanese wordspeed, one of the countrys best Drift teams. Will there be a filter on 'Brit' 'Aussie' 'Pole' 'Yank' etc? Just curious.. ;D

Hmm, don't Know? I didn't think Japanese people took offence to anything much. ( Apart from the Chinese trying to do a 'Falklands' on them....

It developed racist overtones during WW2 which continued for many years, and hence is filtered. I assume paki is too.I assumed wrong

Ahh. It's just I was discussing Japfest in my office with Daiki (Who's Japanese) and he uses the J word all the time and I've just asked him if he found it offensive. He laughed. He was also suprised that a gaikoku (His words) ;D Forum, would be so sensitive to another culture, but as has been proved above, selectively so

I think it's because anybody who uses paki is definitely using it in a racist manner, whereas (I would say the majority) of people don't realise that J was used in a racist/derogatory manner for so long that many Japanese people find it offensive.

At the time we had certain members using the term in a very derogatory manner and then hiding behind the "but it is just a shortening like 'Brit'" excuse. It annoyed me so I made the filter.
The other term (and some others) that Stealthstylz used is left as is so it is very easy to find racist people and we can Ban Hammer the living curse word out of them.

So that's why we're not allowed to say Jap? I did wonder but was too embarrassed to ask in case it was something like racism. TBH I must confess I had no idea that was a derogatory term, learn something every day

I'm not sure how the term was been used by members in derogatory manner - as on retorides and many other classic websites 99.9% of users welcome Japanese cars wholeheartedly. Had the internet been around 20-30 yrs ago i would have expected the derogatory comments. Or unless it is not car related ? somewhat puzzled

As I say it was just some members, and they were a touch older than the majority of the board.

My local VDub forum uses limited filters, so most swear words are allowed through. It's a bit of the free-for-all. The funny thing is that the 'c word' is automatically replaced with the word 'gammon'. Needless to say, there's a lot of gammon talk on there Have a J car (owned a Carlos Sainz exactly like this one a few years back; still love the look of them):

PLEEEEEEEEASE can we go back to being able to refer to an 8 mm metric thread by its proper designation or the main motorway between Edinburgh and Glasgow without it coming out as old bean. It does my nut.

I used to love the old dashed blasted swear filter. It was good fun when cads and bounders used to go all caps lock and end up sounding like jeeves and wooster.

There was that one guy that went on a huge sweary rant who ended up looking quite the gent as a result. Current swear filter is inspired by The Fantastic Mr. Fox
