well it looks like i might have to go back to sub contracting/agency work in the next few months, so I'm playing about with the idea of a second car/van that i can use to chuck my stuff in,use for the odd tip run ( maybe one trip a month to visit a mate & help him out with some jobs ) . the reason i want under 1.6 is cheap tax as it could be sat on the road doing nothing for weeks & before 2000 as i reckon i should be able to get something between £300-500 i think the one that ticks most of the boxes would be corsa 1.5td van around an M plate made a quick list of others 106 (maxlee had a good deal on car ) low on my list but did a van aswell saxo don't remember seeing a van clio did they do a 1.5 have i missed any others did the citreon c15 or vauxhall combo of this age come with 1.5 engines

Fairly sure that the Combo B was only available with the 1.7NA. And I think you might struggle finding a Corsa B van with a 1.5TD, as that engine seems to have been reserved for higher-spec models. The C15 was 1.9L only, as was the Renault Extra. You have missed the Citroen AX from your list of sub-1.5L diesels. I'm not very good on late-90s cars, but the Mk2 Clio could be had with a 1.4L diesel, and was introduced in 1998, so you might find one in you price range. Maybe a Corsa C as well? As small diesels hold their value well - certainly better than petrols - it might be worth looking at petrols depending on the number of miles you're planning to do. I think you might struggle to find a 1.5TD Corsa B that isn't a dog for under £500. Finally, bear in mind that the extra tax is only £85/year - not that much in the grand scheme of things.

cheers for the reply i did miss the AX off but it was on purpose, i really don't like them i also missed off the nova td but they seem to have all gone or are silly money. i hear what you are saying over the tax in the grand scheme of things but as the car / van would only be for "when & as needed" as i have the family car aswell. the other reason is if I'm paying the higher tax then i would get another escort van or an astra maybe a transit . this was just one of the options i have so wanted to cover all base so to speak ;D

Van + Tip run = commercial waste at most council dumps round here. Be prepared for refusals on the gates or to have your load checked for anything that might have come from a site

Nothing stopping you removing the back seat and painting the side windows if you can find a suitable hatchback. One you've missed off your list is a Metro / Rover 100 diesel. Van might be rare but they are just a hatch with no rear seat or window anyway. Don't ignor all petrols if you aren't going to do massive mileage as many can be quite economical - Breadvan Polo makes an excellent "van" with rear seat removed.

Mk2 Golf GTD - 1.6TD (get the later SB engine code with the top mount intercooler) Std they are good for 75bhp and about 55mpg. Adjust the fuel, mod the pump plunger and turn up the boost - I still got 52mpg out of my old one and made about 118bhp on the rollers

Kangoo 1.5 DCI
VW T25 if you can stretch the budget.
I would include upto 2 liters, gives so much more choice. You could find one for a price that offsets the higher tax compared to the 1.6l, anyway.

dodgerover- ive only ever been turned away from the local tip twice once was because i had bought the van & wanted to empty the old owners stuff out of it builder/painter but the van was sign written so said i was trade waste & the other was clearing out a unit & took a load of paint & tyres so they said no chance. & i mean the odd tip run like when the bin is full, hedge & grass cut. thanks for your reply if a little off topic composimmonite- been there, done that with the painted/blacked out windows not a problem with running a car as i ran a 1.1 pug 106 last year t& thats what got me thinking about diesels in the same tax bracket & running costs . also maybe a 600-800 mile weekend trip once/twice a month then it might just sit there for a month !!! i can go out & buy an astra hatchback/estate ,escort hatchback/estate & blank out the windows & call them a van & with a petrol engine i can get them allday long so wouldnt need to have put up the post ;D polo6n1600i-golf 1.6 I'm sure is in the higher tax bracket so no real help as i could just get any diesel/petrol car or van if i was going to do that

seems to be going a bit off topic this , bit like asking about 50cc scooters & being told to look at 1000cc racing bikes !!!
kangoo i didnt know about so thanks for that although i found out this morning of a mate also waiting to here back about a 206 van will have to check engine size
again buying any petrol car/van or a diesel car/van over 1.6 is easy i could walk 1/2 mile from my house & buy at least 2 plus ive already got a petrol car

forget the tip run as i will use my car for the 4 times a year i "MIGHT" have to go or i might look at a 7 1/2 tonne just to cover a few more bases !!! in 20+ years of driving & 25+ being conected to the motortrade i some way. ive had enough cars, vans, large, small, so i have got a rough idea what I'm looking for to fit the purpose of what i want if i want a petrol car i would go & buy one, if i want a small van i will buy one, if i want a large van i will buy one. THE ONE I WANT IS DIESEL CAR OR VAN UNDER 1.6 & MADE BEFORE 2000 if i wanted caravan i would not want advise on a boat then get told that it would be a good idea JUST INCASE the campsite flooded !!! ;D

THE ONE I WANT IS DIESEL CAR OR VAN UNDER 1.6 & MADE BEFORE 2000 I've a suggestion. Go and buy a diesel car or van under 1.6 and made before 2000. And don't bother asking questions for the sake of asking questions. Yours, bought a Volvo 240 estate even though I could get away with a 106 for 99% of the things I use it for, it's saved me the extra tax and fuel in van hire costs for that 1% of the time I've needed a boot the size of a small moon though There's some very sensible suggestions in this thread recommending what you could look at outside of your entirely arbitrary specifications, and why these vehicles would be worth a look, not least because you'd pretty much covered what fits your criteria in your first post...

bioshock -cheers not thought about one of them PHUQ- i have a suggestion for you read the title of my post or my first post & tell me where i ask about any small petrol car or van or even any car/van over 1.6 diesel ? i am sorry for asking questions but looking at your profile i can see that unlike you i am not young enough to still know everything going off my post count of under 400 since 2006 i hardly think you can say i ask questions for the sake of it . there have been 3 posts of cars that i had not thought of which is the reason for the post unlike yours which is pretty pointless joem83 - sorry if i offended you in anyway but as the stuff you posted up was all petrol cars i don't see how it fits in with what I'm looking for if i was looking for a petrol car under 1.6 then they would have been some good ones there but they are fairly easy to find. i thought it was a simple question to ask as i wanted to see if there where some cars or vans id overlooked that fitted in my needs. so thanks to the few that have READ the title you have given me some ideas to look into & the others if you order cheese on toast & get a cheese butty would you accept that

Honestly, nobody is trying to offend you- The suggestions have been made based upon your actual listed requirements rather than the criteria set as they're fairly restrictive (driven purely by tax class?) and you may have missed something that perfectly fits your requirements and is more readily available but discounted due to a list of ideals that may cause compromise elsewhere.

1549cc according to ved website. Some curse word engines down at that level though,if you can go post 2000 then the ford/pug 1.4 tdci is a pretty good little lump and I think £30 a year tax. Or buy a 1.4 escort petrol van and convert to diesel "forgetting" to tell the dvla?
