With a little help from my friends... Or friend... Well, its Sunday morning so bonnets are open and cars are getting even further from ever being in the road in Akku-land. Over two hours to get the air con compressor off the bleeder, its like some kind of thing they'd have on the Krypton factor. I have a Krypton factor of 0. But at theast the AC, the alternator, the accerssory braket and sundry other junk is removed from the front of the engine. Gawd knows whats going on here, but this is Simon, and he will shortly be regretting wearing a white baseball cap.... Anyway the intake manifold was easy enough to remove once we'd actually got to it. This involved removing more stuff like the EGR amplifier, some miscelanous pipes I hope weren't anything important and the distributor. Also had to pull on rocker cover whichis easy enough except for one comedy placed hold down bolt - thought we were going to have to remove the brake servo to get to it (in true Chrysler fashion!) but got it off in situ. Finally, manifold off! And then the crud!!!!I'm used to manky old engines. I wasn;t expecting it to be gleaming like a new pin in there but I was a little horrified at the level of cack in there.... Some of it was in bricks like coal. Here's one with my Motorola for size refference... Now this stuff has been building up in there for the last 22 years but now we've disturbed stuff and broken some of it loose, so its all got to come out or it will be clogging round the cam and oil pump drive before you can say "premature engine failure". Maybe thats on the black side but I know my luck these days... So pugged up all the ports, oilways and such with rags and been degreasing and scraping and all that and, yes, my neighbours probabyl think I have completely lost the plot as Simon and I have been hoovering out the engine... Does the trick though.... And then it got dark. Game over for another weekend.

Good work! Very thorough, my lathargic side would probably have left that crapola in the engine and then regretted in later Its going to look rather pretty in there with the new manifold, carb and shiny filter, and go better too no doubt

Aye, Simon's been a lifesaver today. By the time I got the damn AC cmpressor off ('bout 12:30 or 1 PM) I was getting frustrated working on my own and would probably have jacked it in soon after. Simon turned up and we spent the rest of the afternoon on it and I was quite chilled out. Sometimes you just need someone there for moral support if nothing else.
Tell you what though I think I am defo farming out the work on the Olds to sort the trans...

I've seen that sort of sludging (but not so big chunks) on the PCV outlet and firescreen on the old GT4 I had.
And yes, even though it was smaller, it really does feel like tarry coal particles.

That looks to have gone a long long time between oil changes. We have an oil heater at work that supplies hot oil at 240 degrees celsius to preheat our mixers and that gets the same type of build up. Its a mare to get rid off.

Its evil gunky, crispy stuff. A consistancy all of its own. I think the problem is that the EGR and or PCV systems have not been working right for a while. The EGR valve was blocked up with it too, although of a more dry sooty consistancy there.
Lordy knows how long before its back on the road. The "needed" list is still growing faster than the "done" list. I'm up to my neck in other stuff, have no holidays left to take until April and its dark in the evenings...

I recently pulled the cam cover off of a GA14 (Nissan Sunny Engine) to find a very similar but worse looking scenario, the girl (my friends girlfriend) had not had an oil change since she got the car... years ago... SO, out game the toothbrushes etc and we spent a few hours scrubbing the curse word out of it. It looks good now, we didn't bother blocking anything up though (I had a GA14D sitting aside just incase all went pear shaped) runs mint now, no noises and i'm sure it must be lighter too! It certainly is horrifying to see coal like chunks in such places though!

Si was all for pulling and tanking the motor. I don;t think he gets the concept of "quickly back on the road"
