Get a multimeter and check for voltage to the coil, check the points have not closed up - if they have then the condensor is probably blown too. Have you changed the condensor? Little barrel normally bolted to the side of the distributor.

get a haynes, it will help is the engine turning over? take the air filter off, does it stench of fuel? i'm assuming it is a manual choke. check you are getting spark to the plugs, hold them near some metal and when it is turning over you will see sparks.

distributor cap off, car in first gear on flat ground, take the rotor arm off, and you will see a square cam, on that cam there should be a small plastic follower, now gently pull the car towards you till the plastic follower sits on the edge of the cam, attached to that follower is what looks like a small contact button that should have moved slightly away from another similar contact, that is where you should have a gap, 0.025" if i remember correctly, if there is no gap there will be no spark, tou need to set this with feeler gauges. sounds hard, but its not really

I have this trouble sometimes with my polo. It's always the points, condensation etc. a little drying up with a clean rag inside the dizzy cap, lightly clean/sand the points contacts and she fires up like a good 'un...Hope you get her running swiftly.

NOS was allways the best bet but egay has dryed up with decent old stock over the past few years and been flooded with cheap curse word copys My policy has allways been get it while you can and store it, it's an unfortunate fact that our cheap old dailys are now classics and the parts finding problems have started to come into play, ask any MGB restorer, the parts are plenty but curse word Sorry i cant be more helpfull to the OP but it's all been coverd in prev posts the points may well have closed or need cleaning, if they corrode they will not fire the coil ?

The internet says it would be 1-2-4-3
You'll either have Bosch or Motorcraft distributor, which are slightly different, but the principle is identical. You need to set the distance that the points open at its widest point by undoing with a screwdriver, measuring with a feeler gauge and swearing at it a bit because the inlet manifold is directly above the bit you want to look at.

first thing i would do is get a spare plug or take one out remove one lead from a plug on the car and plug in the loose spark plug lay this ontop of the engine so the threads of the plug are touching metal, then have someone else try to start the car while you watch the plug if it sparks then your points cant be far off and i would start looking at the fuel system if it doesnt spark then its your ignition system

My good friend. Andrew Watson of Arrow Alinement Bishopauckland came and spotted the mistake straight away. And V8IAN was bang on the money about the rotor arm was way out.
