I've just had a stroke of genious/rediculouse!
How about getting a decent example of the less loved straight 6 powered Rover SD1 and transplanting the lovely but cheap 4.0ltr 24 valve straight 6 from a Jag XJ40 into it?
Lots of power and torque, modern EFi and multivalve technology. British and all alloy. It must be worth a go? Both cars are pretty cheap these days.
What do you reckon?

This strikes me as one of those ideas thats fairly obvious, but not regularly heard of, so there must be something stopping it being dead straight forward. Has it not been done because of the extremely obvious Rover V8 conversion for the SD1? It would be great, and i bet it could be done on a tiny budget too.

Sounds great is it easy enough, like the bits will fit without too much arguement? it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Might be worth seeing what you can do to the standard six cylinder engine first though. I think they are much over-looked but a straight six can be made to sound and perform just as well as a V8. Albeit in a less wuffley kind of way.

ive thought about doing that to mine many times.. it seams very good and is what I'm sure would have happened in BL if the sd1 lasted a few more years... the ony prob ive had is that mentally (with my sd1) it came with 8 cylinders and I cant quite get to fit it with six...! ive always had a sort of unwritten mental law to never put a smaller engine in a car than it had origionally... yes I know its 4l instead of 3.5 but its 6 cylinders intead of eight!! yes my head works in some mental way...!! but please do it it is a very good idea. I was toying with the idea of fitting two pintos side by side as a kind of square 8 4l configuration in mine withe the motors chained together and a single centrally mounted gearbox! I even have the sketches somewhere...!! si

Chain driven? Sounds like trouble.
This is why I said get the cheaper straight 6 car. My old man had one from new and the engine was lovely (2600) and detuned of course as they were scarily close to V8 power levels. (5bhp close)
The Jag gives out about 225Bhp I think according to the recent PPC article with lots of torque. Better then the equivalent BMW six and lighter aswell!
If only I had the money!

Could be a good way to make use of an SD1 shell that someone's ripped the V8 out of! So those Rover six-bangers are pretty powerful when tuned? All I'd heard was bad stuff about them, but I have no experience with them. I think a Jag transplant sounds excellent

Well I have a mate who has lots of 6 powered SD1'2 so I'll see if he'll lend me one. He also does the odd bit of banger racing so maybe he'll come across a crusty XJ40 that can donate it's engine and prehaps g/box.
