Just a quickie . . . So... how do you do it ? I can't see where the adjustment comes in - is it a spring changing / cutting affair or is there adjustment ? So many people use them I cant imagine they all buy special springs that's all - unless it's how you mount it to the chassis, shimming etc? Johnny69 ? Alistair? Nightmares... AAANNNYYOONNEE !!!!! And for titilation and no reference:

Cut springs for the win.
Although if you have the option of mounting the crossmember where you want this would definatly be a better option because once you start lowering a cortina front end too much you get too much negative camber and you bottom out all over the place.

Hey Rev. Forgot you on my panel of experts...
what i can't get my head around is : I offer up cross member. Mount crossmember. Engine in - back on the ground... oops, bottoming out...
Is it just trial and error ?
This is starting to sound really daft but I can't see a good / reliable method...

The way i do it is take the springs out and fit a length of bar between the top and bottom shock mounts so the the wishbone sits with almost level with the ground. This is pretty much where you want to aim to have the suspension set for normal use. Then you can fit the crossmember to the car getting the desired ride hight and once the engine and springs and all that is back in if you need to you can cut the springs down or fit uprated ones and generally play about with it.

I have a similar problem with the moggy. Theres no way i'll get anywhere near the stance i want with the standard suspension so its all got to go. I'm having nightmares now though after seeing the SVA thread that was on here the other week.

I'm with the Rev on this one. The suspension will have an optimum working height (probably where the wishbone is parallel to the ground - but it'll be a case of replicating how it was in it's intended use - they probably spent milliond developing it that way!), use a length of bar in place of the shock to lock it at that height and fit the crossmember/unit in place. After it's fitted then get springs made/find springs that will keep it at that height when it's all set up.
There'll be people soon who actually know what they're talking about though...hang on in there! ;D

custom cars shouldnt have to be SVA'd according to my mate who builds race cars profesionally, as long as the car still looks more or less like its sposed to and its engine is in the same place anyway.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Just a little note to add that for some cars with a coil over shock it might be possible to get aftermarket units that have an adjustable spring pan. That's what we have on the Herald - There's about 2" adjustment of the lower spring cap on the Spax shocks so, with short uprated springs fitted I can actually adjust the ride height without taking anything off the car.

Thats the sort of thing but the TSSC is not known for its bargain prices I've found some AVO's advertised on the Jigsaw website for £141/pair

if its a cortina front end lowering lots requires the bottom wishbone to be beefed up due to the way the bump stop work if it sits to low it will bottom out this causes the shock to punch through the lower shock mounting point and cutting or removing the bump stop will just make things worse . limit is around -3" realy and -2" will place the lower wishbones paralell to the ground on a late mk3 or mk4/5 early mk3's can be hit or miss if they still run the origonal setup -3" is where you want to be
