Hi folks Well the Avenger hasn't even gone yet and the money is burning a hole in my pocket. I'm looking for a large saloon with decent luggage space and motorway ability for Le-mans in June which also needs to get my and the family to a few shows this summer The Stack light, Beruit Taxi style Mercedes seem to fit the bill and I've got my eye on a very tidy 220 but what are they like to live with? Are parts easy to get? What do I look for? Will it be capable of 700 motorway miles across France? As always, pics welcome

The w114/w115 model was launched in 1968 as a replacement for the fintail model. These models are generally known as New Generation' or stroke 8.
I think the 115 are four cylinders and 114 are straight sixes.
There was a very slight redesign in 1972/3 - generally the only obvious sign of a later one is a more aerodynamic front valance (the white one in the picture is a facelifted one, a bigger grille, and a padded steering wheel
Watch for rust in all the usual places - in particular around the front headlights, bottom of front and rear wings, and the sills and underside, particularly where the rear suspension bolts onto the bodywork.
Service parts are available through people like German and Swedish but other bits are generally autojumble or Mercedes.
Mercedes can supply a lot of parts for their older cars, a lot more than someone like Ford, but you have to pay Mercedes prices. There are some specialist Merc breakers but they generally specialise in newer cars
A good one should take 700 motorway miles with ease - if you're cruising!

What do you need to know? Engines are bullet-proof, all parts are available from Mercedes and a lot are available from Euro Car parts or GSF. Body-wise, look for rot on the sills, particularly front and rear corners. Arches rust, door bottoms, and the front wings behind the headlamp bowls as years of mud and curse word sticks there and rots the metal. You can usually tell this has happened when rust starts bubbling on the tops of the wings. But fear not, because you can get pattern wings for about £90 each. As for living with one, I've had mine for 5 years. It's broken down once in that time when the thermostat gave up. It'll eat the miles all day long. Not the most fuel-efficient car in the world, or the quickest, but hey. Couple of mine...

Dad had one a one stage...... correct , eats miles with a smile. Who cares about fuel consumption when you have a load of other benefits..... ie space vs pogo sticks, comfort, reliability, and to this day, they do have a dignity. My uncle has had a diesel from new, and it has done well over a million KM's.... !!!! so it can be done.
DO IT !!

Excellent cars, Had one for a while, 2.2 petrol manual, used to regularly go out of tune and drink fuel at an alarming rate when driving enthusiasticly........ about 8mpg was the worst I got out of it and about 22mpg was the best Would still have another one tomorrow.... just so cool to own and drive, comfortable, well built loads of space and with nice slim pillars so they feel light and airy GF at the time loved it for entirely different reasons..... was a very accomodating and comfortable vehicle ;D Do it, not "cheap" motoring but you wont regret it

Hi, I'm new to retro rides and I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm probably going to buy a Mercedes w115 230.4 sometime next week, and I was wondering if anybody could help me with the following: 1) What would the fuel economy (mpg) be like in this car? I know this can vary (somebody has had 8mpg ), but I'm looking for an estimate. 2) I'm probably going to strip all the paint and give it a new paint job, but I would also like to replace the interior. It is perfectly fine condition MB Tex, but the color isn't to my liking. Is there anyway of changing the color without actually getting new seats? I know that some companies provide leather color changing services, but this is vinyl, and I'm not sure that it can be done with this. 3) I'm going to need some spare parts, to get it up and running, some of which are fairly expensive, do you know of any people/clubs etc which may be able to help me with used parts? Erm... I guess thats it for now. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

Hello jugo, welcome to Retro Rides. Another possible W115 owner! Right, I'll give you my opinions on your questions: 1) In my 200, I've managed 30+ mpg on a run at about 70mph. This has plummeted to 14mpg in very cold weather! So you can reckon on an average of about 25mpg with various driving conditions (urban / long runs) I reckon. 2) I think there's a dye you can get for vinyl, but I don't know how successful it would be. 3) Try: Mercman Tel: 023 8078 4444 www.mercman.net-OR- Boss Parts Tel: 0113 2813672 www.mercedesparts.co.ukBoth break huge amounts of Mercedes cars, and if one doesn't have it, the other place will. Both do mail-order too. Feel free to post a "Hello" thread as probably not many people will see this

Thanks for the response. It's looking like I'm going to get it in the next week or so, but I haven't seen it yet, apart from a few pictures. It apparently has no rust at all around the usual areas, but it hasn't been started for almost a year. So, I'd be grateful for any pointers for things to look for (mechanically) when I go and see it, although I guess I can't really check as the car won't start...but yea my gut feeling tells me that it won't have any serious problems.
The owner said that he's tried to start it, in the past week, but the keys don't seem to be opening the doors or something?? So how easy is it to get a set of new keys and locks, and at what price?
Thanks
