Hi guys here we have my grandmothers Polo 6n automatic in Dragon Green, selling it due to her not being able to drive any longer. This is the best standard 6n I have seen as you would expect from a 40,000 mile car. It has also been kept in a garage for its whole life, and serviced, by the same man! At an approved VW garage, or local garage. So Here is the easy read part: Good Points: Low Miles Full service history Clean as ANYTHING Totally original, even the radio Cheap insurance being an automatic Will have 1 Years MOT before sale. Four good tyres, spare has never been used New Battery Sunroof Black interior, not the grimy grey/beige one Bad points: Few scuffs on the bumpers No tax Anyway, have some terrible phone pictures And some pictures of the bumper scuffs: So its a brilliant car which will last a long time yet. Price: £1500 Contact me on here or send me a text on 07740 883746

If that's the best you've seen I'd hate to see the worst!!! I'd at least get the bumpers sprayed so it looks ok to even entertain that kind of price for one fella or you'll be stuck with it forever.

What would you recommend in that case? It is after all only worth what people are willing to pay for it

You could put it on the "What's it Worth" section. I'd put your tin hat on though if you think it's anything like what you've advertised it for. Mine was cleaner than that, manual, same year, colour ( presume its 1.4?) and I was very happy to see it driving away for £475... But, you never know

What would you recommend in that case? It is after all only worth what people are willing to pay for it Never agreed with that "it's only worth what someone's willing to pay" nonsense but IMO you need to at least get it looking mint to say its mint if you catch my drift? Probably wont cost you a lot more than £200 to get the bumpers painted up mint or even a really good second hand set as that dragon green was a popular colour but even then I'd say you will be a bit high on the price. Try for a grand as it stands on eBay as that seems to be the highest price cars around but expect the usual 8,000,000 timewasters etc.

What would you recommend in that case? It is after all only worth what people are willing to pay for it £495 at a real real max and it would have to drive something special at that...

Just curious but how would you base value?

Never agreed with that "it's only worth what someone's willing to pay" nonsense Just curious but how would you base value? Me either! Its only worth what someone will pay? Oh ok.......I'll walk up to a BMW dealership and dump £2,000 on their desk for a brand new X6......Must be worth £2k then.... WTF?!?!?!?!? I price my cars at a market average for that make and spec. If condition is really good or mileage really low I'll increase slightly. This Polo for instance....I bought one about a month ago with for £176 and super low 62k on the clock. Put a fresh MOT on it, needed no work but had two months on the old one but thought would sell better with a brand new 12. Bodywork was very clean and engine!wow was so quiet! Guess what I got for it.....................................................£441 I have a 53' 2004 1.4 TDi Polo for sale for £1,995 so for £1,500 you can achieve alot newer shape I say no more...

Never agreed with that "it's only worth what someone's willing to pay" nonsense Just curious but how would you base value? Well for me it's one of the most ridiculous statements ever made,no doubt invented by a professor or a student, lets say an educated type. If you break the statement down, how could it ever make sense? Eg mrs Simpson next door, always had brand new cars, plain 5 dr type things goes over her late uncles house and opens the garage. Sitting there is a 1970 2 dr escort in great order, sat there since he was unable to drive in 1989,just started once a month to keep it free and occassionally driven out of the garage. She looks at the superficial rust etc,no tax or mot and phones the scrappy,as its "only an old escort". Now you and I know that's at least £3000's worth of car, more likely £4/5000, and mr scrappy knows this too,do you honestly believe he's gonna give her £3000 for it there and then? Or is he gonna just put it on his wagon, drive away and laugh all the way to the bank? Same scenario, but mrs s is a bit more clued up,looks on t'internet and sees that there could be some money in this. Puts it on eBay and lets it run,car makes £1700,she's a bit confused as every other one was going at £3/4000 so the buyer emails her saying he's on his way to collect now. She says sorry I'm re-listing it as it didn't get anywhere near where I thought it would be,buyer responds with "well,it's met it's true value as that's only what someone's prepared to pay for it". She agrees as of course that's true,no one phoned from the local paper she advertised it in and someone in work did tell her eBay is full of timewasters. And after all,it's only an old escort, £1600 will pay for a nice holiday to Italy. OR,is it that they did a bit of eBay investigating, realised this was her first auction, realised she had perhaps not sold the cars true merits, not taken any pictures, not mentioned it was one owner 2 dr shell etc etc as had she done this then every other eBay Tom dick and Harry would have bid it up to £3/4000. Final scenario, mrs s uses her head, realises that after searching t'internet the car is actually worth more than the 3 year old eurobox she's driving about in,so she phones up a local car restorer to re commission the escort, after all it only really needs minor bits and pieces and asks him to sell it on her behalf giving him a commission on top. He asks his mate KGF1 car sales to do this for him, realising with his experience and client list the car will make close to £10-12k as an "excellent unrestored example". Irish rally boy sees it for sale, sends the cash over and job done, after apps said and done mrs Simpson gets a nice cheque for £8000,KGF1 takes £2000 for his hassle and the restorer had £2000 as well. So yes,it's only worth what someone's willing to pay for it,but who that someone is and what their willing to pay varies like the amount of shoes my mrs wears in a day I.e a lot!!!!

Another point I just thought of is geography.
Years ago I made good money buying up cars in London/Birmingham etc where there was a better choice and bringing them back to Swansea to make a decent profit on it.
It's surprising how short a distance most people will travel, hence if he put that polo with minted up bodywork in his local rag in the nice leafy area where he lives,my guess is someone will want a nice small auto with "low mileage" that they can just pop round and collect there and then rather than getting a train to Liverpool into an area they've never been to see a car they know nothing about etc etc so in that respect people will pay more for a car then.
I've delivered cars for people a few times as they've paid full price plus fuel just cos they can't get out of work or are too busy etc,so it's IMO not a given thing in any sale that folk just say "well it's only worth £500,I saw one on eBay for that price so that's all I'm offering" to which I usually respond "ok,good luck with your eBay car",however there's been times where I've been so desperate to sell that if someone had made any sort of offer I'd have taken it so again,I don't see this statement as being accurate in anyway in the REAL world.
After all the book price on a sierra cosworth is about £150 but I paid ten times that for just a trimmed shell!!!! So it's only worth what someone's willing to pay for it? But how much is that?

I sold a manual one of these a few years ago in similar condition for £380. This IMO is a £400 car for a middle aged lady who wants an easy car to pop to the shops in.

What you think a car or anything for that matter is worth you will only discover its true value once its sold,
I could advertise a motor for whatever price I want but its only worth what a punter is prepared to pay hence it sells...................

The statement "it's only worth what somebody will pay for it" is 100% true and realistic. The example of walking into a BMW dealer with £2k is a good illustration. Of course you wouldn't get it for £2k because plenty of people are willing to pay more. If all other buyers were only willing to pay £1500, I'd say they'd sell to you for £2k, hence "it's worth what somebody is prepared to pay", quite simple.
